Any recommendations and advice for trip to Amazon?

My brother and I would like to take a 3 to 7 day trip to the Amazon (26, 28 y/o from SF, Ca). I would like to get into something pretty authentic and not too touristy for a few days out of the trip - so maybe 3 days at an authentic jungle location, and 3 days in a really nice resort. Does any one have any recommendations for travel agencies or programs that they have gone thru and enjoyed? Anything I should DEFINITELY do or NOT do other than the medical exam requirements for traveling?

  1. Advices:

    1) Get a tourist guide "for sure"!

    2) Get a mosquito repelent

    3) If you are very white, put lots of sun screen

    4) wear boots or comfortable shoes to walk in the jungle

    5) a digital camera (it is beautiful)

They are many tourist guide around Amazon. Take a look at some of the sites I found on google (see below). Also get in touch with the brazilian embassy or consulate near your town and ask if they would have any recommendation. I am sure they will help you as much as they can.

  2. Hi there, amazonia is fantastic, but do not forget to take "febre amarela" vaccine.

febre amarela is a disease caused by the bite of some especific bugs.

  3. If you go into the water, don't pee in it. Parasites will swim up into you while your urethra is open. This is something many Brazilians know about. I live in the bay area too. I'll be going back to Brazil in June. Don't forget to write me back to tell me how it went.

  4. It is important to you to take a vaccine at least ten days earlier ('febre amarela' - I don't know if the name in english is 'yellow fever'?)

I recommend the ariau amazon towers hotel

What to do there - check this site

The Amazon is a magnificent place, rich in bird and plant life. Much of the rainforest is impossible to reach, making the river the only means of transport. The luxurious and small cruise is a magical way to see a mysterious and endangered part of the world.

  5. whatever the plans, pack lots and LOTS of mosquito repellent.

  6. You can sign up for any 3 day jungle trip to the Amazon in Manaus.  Amazon Riders is a good company there.

  7. Forget it.  Go to Costa Rica instead.  You'll be glad you did.

    Belize rocks too.
