Been working out for a while, and used to drink whey protein shakes. But recently I have become a vegan, and was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for a protein shake for vegans. I've heard of stuff like hemp protein and pea protein, but needed to know what is best. Thanks

  1. Living Harvest, makes great chocolate hemp protein shakes, as well as other flavors. Nutiva Organic makes good Hemp Protein Powder as well.

  2. Congrats on going vegan. Vega has 26 grams of protein per serving (two small scoops). I'm not too keen on the taste, but it's vegan and very healthy.

The products are shown here: http://sequelnaturals.com/vega/products/...

    Good luck!

  3. Most health food stores carry powdered soy protein - and some carry a soy-based complete mix.  Rice milk is probably the best milk replacement available, if you want something resembling milk.  Soymilk is generally extremely high in fat.  (Rice milk is also sweet, which makes a box of it perfect for morning cereal if you are camping.)  I used to get a really, really super powdered protein mix, which included soy powder and lots of pulverized nuts and seeds, but it was bought, and the new owners quit making it, over 10 years ago.

So.  If you started with powdered soy protein, added apple juice (tasty and cheap in relation to other juices), spirulina, and raw sunflower seeds, you would get a fairly healthy and tasty assortment of nutrients.  Substituting ricemilk for juice would give you a creamier mix and one that was less sweet.  You can also, of course, add any fresh fruit pulp.  Your nearest large organic food supplier will probably place their less-fresh product on a good sale price just after it peaks in freshness.  (Not so at chainstores - their stuff looks great for ages but doesn't have much taste.  I think we're talking relatives of "fishmatoes" here, genetically engineered artificial fruit....)

  4. The best one is made with coconut milk!

  5. I recommend you read a book called the China Study (google it). You do not need (nor want) the complete protein you get from a protein shake. It will give you a whole new perspective.

  6. probably a lot of recipes will include tofu...I think some tofu, rice milk, flavor, ice whizzed up in a blender might be pretty OK...good luck
