  1. "cheap" and "Venice" are enemy words :-)

  2. Hotel Diana, Ive stayed there and although it is a two star hotel is it surprisingly very comfortable and clean, the room we had was small but backed on to a lovely courtyard.

Heres the best bit, reasonable rates and literally on top of St mark's square!! So you can go for a nice romantic walk round the sites day or night!!

    Have a good trip!

  3. An excellent site for finding accomodation in Italy, in general, and Venice is venere.com. http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/ You can narrow down your search to a specific area of the city and sort by price, guest rating and other criteria. There are guest reviews of the hotels that are useful for getting a feel for what to expect. I've used this site to find places during Carnevale in Venice and Octoberfest in Munich and other places and have always been pleased with the results.

In the lower price range, the Locanda Correr is close to Piazza San Marco and Rialto Bridge. Make sure you get directions from the hotel if you book it. You need to know that the Hotel is a walk-up - no elevators. http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/caste...

Another excellent option in the lower price range in the Hotel Villa Casanova on the Lido. It's a 10 minute boat ride to Piazza San Marco and a 10 minute walk to the beach. http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/#o=de...

You might also consider the Hotel San Moise which is on one of the canals with a lot of gondolas and is very close to Piazza San Marco. http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/san_m...

A really good option near the train station is the Hotel Abbazia

  4. Ask the Travel Agent if they have any deals.

  5. I have twice stayed in cheap hotels, one off St Mark's Square and one backing on to a canal not so far form there. I found both of them in old copies of The Rough Guide to Italy. I cannot remember off hand what they were called but I expect you can get the guides on Ebay.

  6. We got a room with shower through www.hostelworld.com, and when we got there we discovered it was in fact a tiny apartment, and lovely. And very cheap for Venice!

  7. There's no such thing as a cheap hotel in Venice - if you find one I doubt you'd want to stay in it.
