Any recommendations for upgrading a Bontrager select triple (9 speed) to 10? Current BB is ISIS/Truv giga.?

I've never used the small chain ring (ever). Do I simply make sure I choose a crank that uses octa or ISIS, so that it fits the frame? Frame is an Trek alpha aluminum 1500. Please don't suggest new bike...I need to wait another year or two before dropping 4K.

  1. First, the small ring on a triple is for helping all but the strongest riders deal with tough climbs.  If you ride where it's mostly flat with some gentle grades, you probably won't use the small ring.

You want to convert your 9spd to a 10spd?  Why do you want to change your crankset?  Did someone tell you that your crankset isn't compatible with a 10spd drivetrain?

To convert to 10spd, you'll need a cassette, a chain, and new shifters.  If you still want to opt for replacing the crankset to a double, you can add that and a new front derailleur to your list as well.

Is getting two additional gear ratios worth that much to you?

  2. Well, Im not much of a techy on bike gear, but id suggest hitting your local bike shop in town and talking to them, they are usually more helpful and knowledgeable on things like that.

    Good luck!
