Question:

Any rock climbers out there?

I asked a Q in geology, wondering why people might be interested in geology, I have gotten no response. My reason was, I was climber, and I think you better know what you are climbing on if you want to stay alive. I am quite fascinated by it though, way beyond the sport of climbing. That just opened my mind. Does that make sense? Any other climbers out there whose interest in geology has been sparked by their sport, by their passion ?

  1. Before I took geology, I thought there was limestone, granite and sandstone... that's it... lol I was way off. Anyways I don't think it's important. You can have the same kind of rock and one climb will be bomber and the other be choss. I think it's more to do with weathering than actual rock types.

  2. I know climbers talk about different kinds of rock, but there interest (like you say) is usually limited to how it affects the climbing.

I've been climbing for a long time and know the difference between Volcanic (granite, basalt) and Sedimentary (sandstone, shale) enough to know which breaks easy and which will be sharp or slick - but don't have much more interest than that in the rock itself. It is the climbing of them and the experience that I like.

    Good Luck
