Question:

Any serious runners out there who have used Redline energy drink prior to a run?

I bought a can of this stuff yesterday, but after reading about its effects online, am reluctant to use it and attempt to run before getting expert opinions... I see that you are only supposed to take half the can. I am 5'3", 110lbs... wondering if I should just have 1/4 to 1/3 of the can, or skip it altogether? I'd hate to get out there and have my HR over 200!!

  1. Don't drink it!!!!

That stuff is ridiculous. It makes you feel like you're about to die.

This 8 year old kid had a heart attack from drinking them.

Just go get a Monster or something

In some places, you have to be 18 to buy Redline. INTENSE!

  2. O.K. I have had this stuff before workouts. the first time I had a swig my heart rate started to race, but I was also sick that day

So I reluctantly increased before another workout and I felt more energized but not even close to a sickish state then next time I downed the remaining 6 OZ and I felt fine. Long story short you should definitely have a small swig and diagnose it from there. Thats what I did and now I'm on the concentrate and I feel really good.

  3. Serious runners don't use it...skip it.

  4. Caffeine will definitely raise your Heart Rate.  You must be pretty young if you're looking to elevate it over 200.  I honestly can't even imagine getting my Heart Rate that high.

Anyway, Caffeine is just going to get your HR higher, faster.   It doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to run faster.  The only real benefit that I've ever had from Caffeine is that it makes my body less resistant to pain.   It's never really made me go any faster.

I personally would skip it.  But, if you want you could "experiment" with it.  I would consume just a small amount at first and run SLOWLY.  You can take more/less, and workout at a higher intensity once you're more familiar with the effects of the Redline drink.  But, when trying something new, you definitely want to keep it safe.

  5. skip it
