I heard that my casual swimming pants have more drag than the Jammers. Should I switch over for speed in my swim team?

  1. yes, its very difficult to swim at ur best in board shorts because they provide too much drag and it can also be hard in your shoulders. some coaches make their swimmers wear boardshorts during some practices to increase the resistance and the difficulty level, but only a few practices as they are careful not to over do it. jammers are skin tight and provide almost no drag, allowing the swimmer to achieve their fastest times. and on a personal note, anytime myself and my swimmer friends saw another swimmer in boardshorts, we pretty much laughed at them cause it usually meant either they were big babies and were afraid to wear a speedo or jammer, or they just plain didnt know what they were doing.

  2. What do you mean by "casual swimming pants". If you mean shorts of any description, then of course they will have greater drag.

You can get jammers for racing e.g. Speedo FS pro, or for normal use e.g. Speedo endurance.

I wouldn't race in my endurance jammers, but apparently fast skin jammers are better than 'normal' trunks (banana hammocks, speedos, briefs, you catch my drift) because they are apparently more hydro dynamic. On the same basis, the body suits are better than the jammers....

For training, I would consider drag shorts.

  3. Switch to the jammer. Those swim trunks will cause you to slow down significantly by creating too much drag. The racing suits are designed so the water piratically rolls off of you so you will have less drag and will be more agile in the water. the regular, every day, swim trunks are made for recreational purposes...not racing and they will cause you to be significantly slower and will hold you back from getting the times you really can get.

If you want more drag during practice you can buy things called "drag suits" that go over your speedo or jammer so you can gain more strength and when you take them off for a race you're stronger and faster! I highly recommend switching over for your team. Plus you'll likely be the only person wearing swim trunks and people will wonder why you wont wear the normal racing jammers or speedos.
