Any solution for a cheapie TV with wonky colours in concentric rings?

We have a Centrex TV 68cm which we bought four years ago. Today when we switched it on, all the colours are distorted. When it should be nothing but blue (eg AV channel), there is a big green oval in the middle of the screen fading to red and then blue. Does this sound familiar? Is it an easy fix? Or worth fixing at all?

  1. This must be a CRT Tube TV and it has become "gaussed" from an electrical field or very strong magnet nearby.

It can be fixed with a degaussing ring, which is a common TV repair tool that your local service shop should have on hand. The TV shouldn't be too heavy for two people to remove and bring to the shop. Should be 30-35kg.

Just make sure you find the source of the magnetism and remove it before putting the TV back in it's place.

Also, most tube TVs have degaussing rings built into them, but they are very weak and only fire up for a brief moment when the TV is turned on after being in the off state for about 15-30 minutes. So each time you turn it on it will get a little better as long as the magnet has been removed, but it could take a very long time.

  2. The degauss thermistor has failed mid cycle ! It will need replacing and the CRT degaussing manually to complete the job. Easy job for any TV Tech. I don't think you have any magnets near at all .

    Cheers Pete
