The water softener cycles early in the morning. The ice maker and sometimes the water dispenser now have this briny taste. So does the ice- yuck! Has anyone experienced something similar and what can i do about it? I have tried turning off the ice maker at night, but sometimes I forget and then the ice gets ruined!

  1. This can also happen if you have an auto defrost freezer.  When freezers auto defrost, ice melts a little, and generally impurities stay on the ice, and then it freezes again, and the cycle continues.  If you have a auto defrost freezer, and you don't use "enough" ice, run the old stuff down the garbage disposal (it actually is good for it).  If your ice isn't at least clear at the edges, if not all the way through, you're going to taste a bit of a difference (bubbles in ice (if oxygen)) can be good.  But not in your case. If you're "new" to softened water, it will have a briny taste, hate to say it.  I grew up on Well water high in calcium, fluoride and other minerals, but I still love the water from back home (even if it's bad for me).  If water has a bad taste, the best option is a carbon filter for drinking water.  Taste is generally caused by Ionic compounds, which are filtered out with activated charcoal.  Hope that helps.
