  1. The passport requirement planned for January, 2008, was postponed.

Things will bea easier if you do have a passport, but if not you can still drive between USA and Canada with a driver's licence, and it helps to have a birth certificate with you as well.

    Other things....

Save yourself a few bucks and fill up the tank immediately before you reach the Border.  Gas is more expensive in Canada and is priced by the litre, ( which is about 35.3 ounces,) and today's price in Toronto is CA$1.25 per litre, or about $4.50 per US gallon.

Also check your speedometer and see if it has digits shown for kilometres, as Canada speed limits are in KPH.

    Rough approximates

    30MPH   50KPH

    40MPH   60KPH

    50MPH  80KPH

    60MPH  100KPH

Speed limits on major highways (numbered as 400 series) are mostly 100KPH, but watch for sections that are only 80, such as when you first enter Canada at Niagara Falls.

Final point, radar detectors are legal in NY, but they are NOT legal in Ontario, and if you have one in your car and are stopped by the police, they will confiscate the detector and you may also be fined.

  2. Actually, you don't need a passport; all that is required to drive across is a driver's license and proof of citizenship (birth certificate).

Of course, if you have a passport, that will make it easier.
