  1. My city does not have an Indian grocery so I oreder my spices from Penzy's. They appear pricy however, I only need to use 1/2 the amount called for in a recipe. I make Palak Paneer last night and used 1/2 the amount. It was great ! They have a nice assortment of India spices. I have added their website.

  2. You can buy Cinnamon powder, Ginger powder, Nutmeg, Mace, Turmeric powder, Coriander, Mustard powder at any American store. Normally, they are cheaper than at Indian stores or imported from India, Many stores carry Curry blend. McCormick Curry Powder is quite acceptable.

Indian Stores carry imports from India, they are priced the highest.

The cheapest way is to buy spices in India. Make sure you package them appropriately. They should properly sealed and stored away from sunlight in cool dry place. Most of the spices will remain good for one year if stored properly.

  3. According to my relatives, spices are much cheaper in the US but not only that --- they claim better & higher quality spices are also found in the US.  They believe the best quality and highest grade spices are all exported and what's left is sold to the local population.

Be that as it may, the food in India tastes 100x better than an dish made here in the US, so explain that!

  4. Some of the Dollar Barns will have curry powder, cumin, chili flakes in bottles, but for real good spices, the Indian grocery will have the same for a resaonable cost, here in Toronto Canada we have a large Indian/Sri Lankan and Bangaladeshi community so there is not problem with any of those ingredients here, your going to have to find a spice store, even one that maybe sells in bulk for a deal.
