  1. Sorry no, fasting is unhealthy. Your body needs food constantly, it requires energy every single day, and fasting does not supply it with what it needs. In fact, fasting causes lasting mental and physical problems, including delusional thinking, false euphoria, poor appetite control, slow metabolism, etc.

The more you fast, the hungrier you are when you stop, and the more it messes with your brain. There have been huge experiments where men and women were subjected to very restrictive diets. They all became eating disordered very quickly - hiding food, obsessing about food, going through massive mood swings, having false "placebo effect" type thoughts and feelings about what the fasting was doing for them - when in fact it was just destroying them.

You mess with your body's chemistry too because you need a regular intake of vitamins and minerals. Fasting also deprives you of your natural balance of salts that keep you functioning. While not as bad as purging, fasting is just not worth it.

I don't know where you got the idea that fasting regularly will help you but it's a very, very bad idea. Unless you do it for religious reasons (some faiths are that strict), I don't see any reason to do it whatsoever. Just eat normally, exercise, and let your body do what nature intended.

  2. I'm vegan, not vegetarian, and I fast for religious reasons a few days/year. It is however only a day each time and I do it because it connects me spiritually with others who traditionally do the same thing at the same time.

I would however never fast for any health reasons. :

  3. I don't fast because I don't see a reason to.  I eat healthy and get enough fiber.

  4. I completely agree with Maggie.  Religions use the fasting method for the very reason that it affects you mentally.

Sometimes when you are very ill than a diet of all liquids is recommended.  Other than that, fasting is scam.  You don't release toxins when you fast.  Want to release some toxins?  Eat a lot of fiber to sweep your colon and get vigorous exercise at least 4 times a week.

  5. fasting is not good for vegetarians....your all ready not getting meat protein....

  6. "Fasts are sometimes accompanied with enemas to cleanse your intestinal tract, and that can be very dangerous," says Fernstrom. "The intestinal tract has a lot of good bacteria. When you are changing that balance, the good bacteria are affected, too."

"There is no scientific evidence it will detox the body. The issue of fasting to cleanse the body has no biological basis because the body is real good at that by itself," says Fernstrom. "The liver is a natural detox center; the lungs, the colon, the kidneys, [the lymph glands] and the skin get rid of toxins."

Fasting occassionally shouldn't be a problem if you are very healthy, but you don't need to do it regularly to cleanse your body. Like Dr. Ferstrom says, "The body is real good at doing that by itself".

    Hope I helped :)

  7. yes me and my family is vagetarian. my sister and my mother do fasting regularly.

  8. I never fast because I can't and never could.  I also don't see the point--I enjoy eating and drinking too much.

  9. I fast in the daytime for 19 days each year for religious reasons.

    I've done that since 1984.

There were a few times when I couldn't do it because I wasn't feeling well, but most of the time I get through it without a problem.

It doesn't have anything to do with my vegetarianism, though. Most people in my religion aren't vegetarian. And I'm not sure what you mean by "strict."
