  1. spend the 9 days somewhere else ...some were the people like americans...

  2. I am also going to France but in June and have about 10 days there.

We are going to spend a day or two in Brussels, and a couple of days in Normandy.  We are going to stay near Mont St. Michel which is an incredible little island and houses a 1000 year old Benedictine Abbey. We're looking into various resorts right on the water- the English Channel.  These is a ton of history in the area- and the beaches of Normandy are supposed to be some of the best in the world.  We're planning on doing most of this travel via the train system since the trains go up to 300 km/hr (186 mils per hour)  If you are interested check out raileurope.ca - it explains the trains and costs pretty well. Finally we'll spend our last few days in Paris.

  3. three days  in   Paris  i  day  in  Normandy  five  days in  nice !!

  4. R as usual gives you a perfect overview, Paris is a city to discover by foot and to get lost in.

I would add that you should go to the Mosquee de Paris and enjoy a tea a la menthe (very sweet hot mint tea) in the courtyard, and take a walk through the jardin des plantes nearby

Michelle is right in recommending the Mont St Michel, it is a jewel for a day visit see the site below, if you drive there I would recommend you go south of the bay to Cancale and have a meal in the amazing restaurant of Olicier Rollinger " Maison de Bricourt" who earned a 3rd star 1 year ago, the menu degustation is around 120 euros, if over the budget you can sample his inspiration and quality product at his other retsaurant which is "restaurant les coquillages" (also a nice hotel) it is on the top of the cliff with a beautiful view of the Bay of the Mont St Michel, nice walks and delicious oysters, St Malo nearby is also worth a visit and my favourite in the area is the lovely medieval city of Dinan ( do not miss the galettes and crepes at the Creperie des artisans near the porte du Jerzual.)

If you have time do go to St Suliac (between St Malo and Dinan ) and have a meal at the exceptional Ferme du Boucanier, the chef used to have a restaurant near the Pantheon, he is belgium and one of the most creative chefs I have seen ( La Ferme Du Boucanier, 2 Rue De L Hopital, St Suliac, France, phone 0223150635)

if you decide to stay in Normandy, and visit the cemetraies, there is a small one of the german soldiers on the north side of the bay du mont st michel whic I like going to.

  5. Nine days in Paris with a day trip to Versailles should be a very nice trip. There's so much to see in Paris that there is really no reason to take the time to travel to another city or cities.

Of course, you should visit all the major tourist "must sees" both the "sights" like the  Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame, Saint Chapelle, Sacre Coeur, Invalides, and the Pantheon and Museums, the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, Cluny, Centre Pompidu, Orangerie, and Rodin Museum.

You should spend some time just strolling around the city to appreciate its architecture and to get a feel for its medieval layout, the Belle Epoch improvements of Baron Hausman, and the modernizations seen in places like the Les Halles Forum and the new Opera in the Place Bastille.

You should take a little time to just sit in a cafe in the Latin Quarter or St. Germaine and people watch.

Enjoy some of the nightlife of Paris. Not the tourist ripoffs like the Moulin Rogue or the Lido but the vast number of fantastic music venues, from the jazz joints to discos.

Eat! And be a bit courageous. Go to places that don't cater to tourists and don't have English menus.  Just point to things on the menu or, better still, walk into a cafe at lunchtime and ask for the daily special which you'll almost always see displayed on a chalk board. don't worry if you don't know what it is! Try it! The worst that will happen is that you'll have a hilarious story to tell about how you got served a calve's head with cream sauce or something else too weird for you to eat.

Mainly, don't listen to the half wits who tell you Parisians are terrible people or adivse staying in a tight little tourist cocoon..

Strike up conversations with strangers, be open minded, put your map in your back pocket and just wander around, get lost, experiment,  learn, take the time to really look at things.

    Be fearless!

Paris is one of the greatest cities in the world. Enjoy!

NB: Versailles is a great day trip. You can take packaged tours there but the way to do it on the cheap is to take the metro line 9 to Pont de Sevres. Walk upstairs and you'll see a bus stop. Take bus # 171 (you will need three metro tickets) and it will drop you off at the front gate. The bus trip will take 25-30 minutes. Figuring one metro ticket to get to the bus stop and then 3 tickets for the bus, the entire transportation part will cost you only 8 metro tickets (4 each way). its open every day except Monday and the admission cost is 20 euros during the week and 25 euros on the weekends for a pass that allows you into all the various buildings and sights on the grounds.
