Question:

Any suggestions for a temporary lock for my student house bedroom?

I am moving into a student house this year, and none of the bedrooms have locks. This worries me because I sometimes go and stay at my boyfriends and don't like the thought that my housemates/housemates friends could get in and use my personal stuff. It also worries me that if we have the inevitable student parties, I would prefer the peace of mind that my belongings were safe in my room.

I asked the letting agency if we could add a pad-lock type lock and remove it at the end of tenancy but they said no.

Is there a solution for this? Perhaps a temporary lock that doesn't leave a mark?

I tried looking at the Howsar Lock but turns out the door can only be locked if you are in the room, which defeats the object for me.

Thanks.

  1. lock your stuff in a safe, or cabinet, in your room.

  2. get a double-sided key dead bolt. Should fit into the doorknob hole. Or get any outdoor k**b, with a key.

  3. look for allternative place to live or just store student things what do you lot carry nowadays Anfrax no Seriuosly stop being so hidey hidey you have to learn to trust

  4. Matey, get to B and Q. They do a student alarm for bedrooms. It's only a tenner and comes with batteries.

  5. You should be able to replace the door handle with one that locks from the outside with a key.  They run about $20 bucks from most any Home Depot or Lowe's.

This won't affect the door and can be removed when you move out, allowing you to put the original one back in.  If the "administration" is concerned about being able to get into your room if absolutely necessary, you can leave a key with the campus police.

  6. go to the hardware store and purchase a doorknob with a key lock, install and don't give anyone a copy.

  7. try a bad smell, works for me.

  8. I personally would hide my stuff and make everything look natural and take a strand of my,  hair tape one end to the door,  wrap it tightly around the door k**b, and the other end to the door post.  That way you can see if someone has been to your room or not!!( If the strand of hair is loose or broken, then someone has been there.).  Or you can do the way of making it obvious that you are out and put up a sign that says "Keep Out"  or  "Do Not Enter".  Or get a personal locker for your room.  But you might NOT want to change the k**b because it can leave a mark.

  9. you can fit a door nob which needs a key they cost about $25,they go straight in place of the old one,any hardware store, alternatively you can electrify the door nob!
