It really depends on the ambiance you're looking for... I would suggest Ra Sushi (although the lines can be long), it's free cover and they serve food till 1 or 2 AM... Very laid back as well and fun for big groups.

Actually for a selection and easy walking -- go to Rice Village around Rice University.  Some good bars, lots of students, and a few other civilized sorts (on occasion).  Food is good, student specials might save a few pennies too.  Also, the chances of hearing a good band, good music, etc. are increased in the Rice area.  Have fun--

Red Katz if you love jazz.. it use to be an obscure hole in the wall..now its popular big time..go during the weeknites ..if you have the cash.. the food is great..the drinks are awesome and the space is tight..close quarters..

Its a diverse crowd..
