Any suggestions for fun stuff to do on an Alaskan cruise?

Question

We will be leaving from Vancouver and ending up in Anchorage. Our group has adults ranging in age from late 20's to 70's and all fitness levels. We will be going at the beginning of September. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks!!!!!

Wel I have never been to Alaska, but by reading reviews I definitely want to go there...

2- click on reviews and go to the ship that you are going on...you can read many reviews from there and it will explain everything that you could possibly want

One thing I did that was most enjoyable was deep sea fishing. My husband and I sent home the halibut we caught and truly enjoyed ourselves. The sea can be choppy on the fishing boat, so you might want to take Bonine first, but the experience is worth it.

go to the glaciers, do some excursions (like the dog sled ones), do some shopping.

The first thing that you need to do is go to the web site for the cruise line that you are going on and (1) look at the activities and features available on ship and (2) look at the shore excursions/tours offered for your cruise.

When we did our Alaska cruise, on a Princess ship, we looked over the shore excursions and picked those that were not too high a price, didn't involve a lot of strenuous activities, and involved some interesting activities.  So here's what we did:

At our first stop in Ketchikan  we did  a tour of the large totem pole park and then to a fish hatchery.  Both were interesting. There was also a tour which went to a logging competition but there was not time for both

On our next stop in Juneau we went to see the Mendenhall glacier.  It was Ok, but on hindsight we would have maybe skipped this as you will see many glaciers on your trip.

at our next stop in Skagway we too a tour bus ride up the mountain the route that the gold rush went.  Its was both interesting and beautiful.  There is a train ride that goes the approximate same route and you see about the same (we saw the train going up and back).  Then we walked around the town and went into the old saloons and shops.

When we went we added the land tour part to our cruise and had a night in Anchorage, a night in Denali National Park, and a night in Fairbanks.  So in Anchorage we went to the Native American Cultural Center.  That was a nice and complete tour experience.

There are some more exciting and higher priced things that you can do like take a bush plane ride and land on a glacier; go for a dog sled ride and pet the puppies; ski or trek across glaciers, etc.  As I said, look at the tours offered; they give plenty of details about their tours.

I used to work for princess and we kind of have the Alaskan Cruise thing cornered...but you should definitely check out the Loggers competition, Mendenhall, The whale sightseeing and crabfeast, ummm... the Red Onion Saloon is a MUST. Thats all I can think of right now. I don't recommend those flightseeing tours..while most are safe, one recently went down with no survivors (holland america). But don't forget to check out the scenic rail and the tundra wilderness tour.
