Question:

Any suggestions for post-op?

I had major surgery three days ago. I spent two nights in hospital. I have no appetite and can eat very little (e.g. 1/2 egg and a few blackberries for breakfast and some steamed spinach for dinner). The hospital staff said to go back to the regular diet, but I can't. Does anyone have some experiences to share of how long it takes to get over a major surgery and back to normal?

  1. just eat what you can, eventually everything will be back to normal. if surgery was only three days ago, just give it some time.

  2. I had pretty minor surgery earlier this year, and it took me several days to feel normal.  I imagine then, that major surgery could take even longer.  However, the best person to ask these questions would be someone in the doctor's office, if not the doctor him/herself.  I'd give it a day or two more and if you don't feel any better, call the doctor.  Until then, just keep hydrated (sprite and gingerale) and eat whatever you can.  I had home-made egg drop soup (just egg in chicken broth).  Follow any instructions the doctor gave you.

  3. No need to rush....your body will let you know.  You will likely be groggy and just sleep a lot for the first few days.

  4. marijuana

  5. When you are recovering from surgery you aren't very active and don't have much appetite.  As you begin to feel better and spend less time in bed you'll eat more.  When they told you to eat a regular diet, they meant not a liquid  or  soft diet.  They aren't expecting you to be eating a platter of nachos.  Be patient -- hope you feel better soon.
