  1. As far as generic hotel chains go, you could do worse than Etap, which I believe costs roughly 50 or 60 euros per night. I stayed at the one near Porte de Montreuil, literally just outside of Paris city limits and within easy walking distance of the métro. Not a glamorous neighborhood by any stretch of the imagination, but you're presumably not going to Paris to spend lots of time in or around your hotel anyway. Otherwise, based on a hunch (I haven't actually stayed there), the Hôtel Tolbiac in the 13th arrondissement seems nice.

  2. I stayed at the Hotel Magendie in the 13th, just outside the Latin Quarter, for 2 weeks during a study abroad trip a few years ago.  The rooms were small but perfectly comfortable. The university still houses students there, and in fact the next study abroad trip leaves in less than a month!

I also spent a few nights in Appart'Valley next to Jardin des Plantes.  The advantage of this hotel is that the room was a kitchenette, so I could prepare a few simple meals during my short stay.  It's a good way to economize.  The downside was that the room I had only had a sofa bed that I couldn't fold back up, so I had to sit on a hard wooden chair the entire time I was there but not sleeping.  Since I never travel just to spend my whole trip in the hotel room, this wasn't so bad.

If you're spending longer than a week, it might be worthwhile to rent an apartment from an agency.  Just a suggestion...

  3. How do you define "decent"?

My favorite hotel is the Hotel St. Andre des Arts at 66 rue St. Andre des Arts in the 6th arrondissment.

Its relatively cheap (89 euros for a double with breakfast and taxes) , very well located, and with a friendly and competent staff.

But there is no elevator, no swimming pool, no gym, no mini-bars, no "all you can eat" breakfast buffet, no cable TV and, in fact, no TV at all.

It is, in short, nothing at all like the Embassy suites in Omaha.

That suits me just fine and I've stayed there dozens of times over the last 30 years but I've heard others complain that its horrible because of its failure to be just like the above mentioned hotel in Omaha.

Assuming you have my attitude and not those of its detractors then I highly reccomend it.

Its a favorite of traveling college professors, air crew, and not a few fashion models.

Breakfast is just coffe and baguette served around am ancient trestle table but the conversations tend to be friendly.

The owner is a philosophy professor (his wife is an artist) and the staff are mainly students who can be very helpful in bringing you up to date on what is happening in the area.

The area itself is great fun. There is a street market just down the block and there are bars, restaurants, and food shops everywhere. The bar, Le Mazet, where Jim Morrison had his last drink in public is across the street.

I stayed there last summer, and it was wonderful. 53 euros a night for a double bed and breakfast. It is within sight of Luxembourg Gardens and not far from Notre Dame. Has an elevator and parking, and the owner is a very nice guy who speaks excellent english. We arrived at 2am the night before we were suppose to get there (oops!) and he let us sleep on an extra mattress in a laundry room, for free. Our room was beautiful and had a private shower and balcony. I would highly recommend this "hotel" (It's really just two stories of a large building owned by a family), and I plan on staying there again in the future.
