  1. look up the manufacturer of the knife. Find their web sight.

    Plug in your Question.

different shaped blades require a different way to sharpen.

on my pocket knife I use three grades of oiled stone to get down to a good edge with drawing motions. Starting with the coarsest first. sharpen only on the side that is already tapered, and keep that angel. graduate down to finer course stones. then use a ceramic draw sharpener. then finally a razor leather strap

  2. If the blade is badly damaged, try to have the manufacturer repair it; it will cost you, but if it's a good knife it's worth it.

Most knives do not come from the factory with a razor sharp edge; in fact, the edge will cut just fine without needing to have a "razor edge", which is quite thin.

I sharpen most of my knives with a "double bevel"; as used on a chisel; that is, the taper of the blade and the taper of the cutting edge are different. This keeps most of the blade as thick as possible, while allowing a fine cutting edge. Most of my knives never get touched by a course stone after the initial sharpening.

A fine diamond hone (I use a light oil, although it is not required with diamond hones), followed by an extra fine honing. Then a leather strop mounted on a flat piece of birch plywood with green or yellow stropping compound.

After using a stone, or even a diamond hone, a burr builds up on the edge of the blade. one side of the knife may feel sharp, but the other will not. Honing will remove this burr. 10-12 strokes per side, repeated twice, is generally enough to do the trick. Hone it or just strop it as needed and it will last a long time.

  3. You would need a good whet rock. dampen it just a little and take your time.
