Okay, so I saw this surfing documentary about people surfing on the great lakes. I've got some surf magazines and did a little research and it seems every spot I have found someone mention is in Michigan. Because on any given day you never really know if the surfs gonna be good I'd hate to drive several hours to find out there's no waves. I live near Chicago in a suburbs a few minutes west. I was wondering if anyone knows of any surf spots on lake michigan? Also, what's the best time of year...I hear falll and winter?

  1. Try contacting the Great Lakes Surfing Association, they can probably steer you in the right direction.

To all those people that said that you can't surf on the great lakes all you proved is that you know nothing about surfing. You can surf anywhere there there is a body of water large enough to produce waves.  Go to YouTube and check out the clips from "Unsalted".

  2. i lved in chicago all my life, i never herad of sufing or nothing in the lake, its not big waves to surf.

  3. Yes, it is during fall and winter when the storms create better waves for the lakes.

Usually it is the west side that would be better. Has to do with the direction of the storm.

I forget the exact websites that can give you more information, but if you just put in great lake surfing in your web browser it will post up information for you.

  4. I have been a lake fanatic I'm Michigan all my life and have NEVER once remotely heard of surfing in Michigan, You need to go to a ocean to do that. Why don't you just contact that magazine since everyone here is so wrong, Thanks for giving me such a good thing to laugh at!!

  5. Lake Michigan really doesn't get that wavy - Lake Superior would be the better bet but the water is pretty cold there.  As for Lake Michigan, you should just wait until a windy or stormy kinda day so you know there will be some waves.
