  1. When you teach, link all concepts together! Like, if you are teaching limits, show how it looks on a graph, what certain equations would look like in graph form, what certain graphs look like in equation form, and how graphs and equations look in table form. Present everything in logical order. Don't do limits before doing trig. Always give problems from easiest to hardest. Don't try to make it incredibly fun, it just comes out cheesy. Only give one problem of each type that you did in class today, never bog them down with homework. Stop often and ask for questions. Don't be mad if you get corrected, it just shows that students are paying attention. Don't be monotonous, but don't be bouncy like a kid. Try to add some humor, My teacher makes funny shirts that are math related, and it really helps lighten the mood. Keep all notes in a notebook, because some kids are too proud to go to their friends for notes if they miss some. Face your kids, not the board. If you don't love math, your kids won't either. Love your job.

Good luck to the soon to be teacher!

  2. * your sister could try some simple puzzles like kakuro, sudoku, etc.

    * there are some truly amazing facts with numbers - eg, you can build pyramids with multiplication tables & discover commonalities - it even helps memorize them. there may be some site where you can find something like this or ask some maths majors to help her out.

    * give students an assorted list of numbers/maths symbols/ geometric shapes...& ask them to create images/pictures/drawings using them in any way they can [they can even invert or rotate them] - eg. making a face, a landscape, a vehicle, etc. etc.....

hope these help her start off ..

    all the best

  3. Do she have a curriculum that she can follow, or a copy of the state standards for her grade? That is the place to start.

  4. There are many wonderful ideas out there for teachers.  Search lesson plans and teaching games.  You will find a gold mine of ideas.  But doesn't she have a curriculum book as well?  Typically the teachers manual give lots of fun ideas..other than "Do all the odd problems on page  wha wha wha wha...".

  5. incorporate jeopardy into the teaching plan and gove rewards or points redeemable for rewards. Its exciting and it gives the kids and incentive. Do that in place of a traditional written exam and i bet you more kids would study, for fear of being embarrased and letting down the team . it also encourages team work
