Is this Carla Suarez a newcomer? i have never seen her before. Did anybody see her match against Pannetta?I think she took her out in 2 sets. Who is this unknown who has gone farther than Venus Williams?

  1. first time i've heard of her as well.. they showed arantxa sanchez in her box in one of her matches.. i hope she's not a "one-trick pony" (she doesn't look like one anyway).. i like her playing style.. great backhand and she has a sunny disposition too

  2. If she's anything like the other Spanish players currently on the tour, she's probably hits with a lot of topspin and is primarily a defensive baseliner.  She's had a great run, coming all the way from qualifying through to the quarterfinals, but I think her luck will run out  in the next match, when she loses to Jankovic.  Pennetta obviously had a mental letdown after her momentous win over Venus, so it's not that surprising that she lost to Suarez.

  3. she is a newcomer. a qualifier in fact. she's also a product of the sanchez casalle academy,i believe. i saw arantxa and her bro sitting watching her match against mauresmo. first time i saw her was at fed cup and i thought she had a nice game....she was beaten easily but that was indoor hardcourt. she seems to be genuine clay court player.

it's sad flavia was beaten though. it can be difficult coming off a huge win as she did and play just as well.

gstokes, how would you know that for sure? she could be better than medina garrigues(already bettered her by getting to the quarters of her first slam for which garrigues never has)and perhaps even as good as her elder predecessors in martinez and vicario. of course, she will most likely play her best on clay.

  4. Interesting-I think she will be like Kraijcek the Dutch player-Young and plays some good matches but will be the same in 10 years and not really improve.

  5. she's young...

    pretty good in clay courts...

    yes.. she's a newcomer.. a qualifier...

may go far until QF of the FO..

  6. All spanish players can play on clay.

  7. She is ugly!!! I haven't watched her matches, so I cannot judge on her game, but the next one with my favorite Jelena I'll be watching!

  8. Yeah, she's a qualifier, still young (19 years of age). I saw her match... she moves pretty well on clay and has good defense, a typical Spanish claycourter. And one thing more, she has a nice one-handed backhand!!! I heard the commentator said, Suarez Navarro's one-handed backhanded is arguably one of the best or the best one on tour w/o the presence of Justine Henin.
