  1. Take as much info with you as possible, why the redundancy, any holiday pay, and last wage payments, wage slips, anything to show them why you were made redundant, and any monies earned. Then if they do help you be prepared to fill in endless forms and for them to take a while to process.

And most important are you actively looking for further employment, any evidence that you have. Sorry about the redundancy, happened to me, horrible

  2. Tell them you No speaka dee English, the lorry just drop you off, tell them you need plenty of money and a house with a garden.

  3. first you will have to go to the job centre and they will give you a phone number to call so you can make a appointment. If you was made redundant after 25 years I'm guessing you had a good payout and they will take that in to account and i don't think you will get anything from the job centre until you use some of the money up.

  4. Nah mate you'll be fine, jus avoid saying "Income based" if they still do it (been a while since i went) try and get "Contribution Based"

  5. sorry about your job. I'm guessing that you have not been near a jobcentre in 25 years so you are in for a shock.

firstly your new claim will be done over the telephone 9they actually hand you a phone in the jobcentre to make the call to a jobcentre call centre)

After that they will send you a copy of the conversation for you to sign and date. They will also ask you for any other informaton they may need, like your P60, wage slips etc

Once that is done you will get your first interview with a Personal advisor who will make a job seekers agreement with you, basically detailing what work you would do, where and for how much. With respect to the Personal Advisors this is a mundane pointless task. Your advisor will tell you when to sign on (you sign every two weeks)

When you visit the Jobcentre to look at vacancies you do it on a touch sensitive computer screen, if you want information about the job you are again given a phone to call a call centre to discuss it

Someone mentioned Income Based or Contribution based JSA - these are basically the same thing and paid at the same rate, they have the same basic rules, expect contibution based is paid for the first 26 weeks, takes no account of your savings or partner. income Based takes account of your partner's money and any savings, so this may mean you are only entitled to 26 weeks of contribution based JSA before they stop paying you depending on your circumstances

The expeience of Jobcentres is not all that unpleasant now (it is also not very useful t be honest), it looks like an ikea store or a up market bank, you seldom see anyone hanging around them for long. The staff are pretty helpful, but desperately underpaid, over workerd, and under trained. Their fasination with giving you a phone is very weird, especially if you actually want to talk with a real live person. The whole experience should be pretty painless but regrestably pretty futile as well
