Any tips for a first time vacation in Cancun?

I leave for the airport in about 3.5 hours. This is my first time there and I am going solo. I am only going to be there 5 days, but I want to make the most out of the experience.

Any tips on safety... are there parts of town to avoid, etc? I already know how not to get pick pocketed or dosed with drugs.

Always keep an eye on your belongings. Do not ever leave your bags or anything unattended for even a second because someone can take them in a blink of an eye.

Be careful about the water.

I dont know of any place in Cancun to avoid....I live here.  Just be smart....just like being anywhere else.  Just have fun....relax....enjoy the culture...people here are very friendly and will treat you right.  Just be careful of the taxi drivers....they will rip u off.  Otherwise....have fun!!!!

stay around all the "tourist" places.  Cancun is a lovely place for the tourists, but the actual neighborhoods where the locals live are not as friendly.  Robberies DO happen.  If you stick to the tourist areas though, you won't have a problem with that.
