Secure your things...just in case your roommate is a thief.

If she asks to use something and you don't trust her enough to use it, say I'm sorry but no...extend it into a white lie (i.e. lie and tell her it isn't yours...your sister let you borrow it or something like that).

Other than that, get to know her first. Go have lunch or dinner with her in the cafeteria, go out walking with her, more importantly communicate with her even if she seems stand-offish and if she acts funny remember that it is her problem not yours.
