  1. Don't live in the dorms.  Way to small for more than one person.

Don't skip class unless you're too sick to get out of bed.

Ask for help if you are struggling in a subject.

  2. Yes:

    1)  As early as possible, register with your campus's career development service.  It's usually in the student services offices.  Participate in everything they offer.  They can help you be confident that you have a good career goal, they can advise you about course work and majors, they can help you with job shadowing and internships in some cases, and when the time comes they can help with resumes, interviewing skills, and even putting you in touch with certain employers.

    2)  Find out what assistance the campus offers you--learn where the tutoring services are, the health services, the financial aid offices, and if it's a big university, any campus escort service if you must go into dark parking lots alone after a night class.

    3.  Organize your time.  First, understand that you don't have to do everything--pick extracurricular activities carefully; make sure you are getting regular exercise so that you don't suffer from the 'freshman 15' (if you hadn't heard, the average college student gains 15 pounds in the first year).  Then, get onto MS Outlook or some other calendar program and block out time every day; mark your class times, designate study time (best: right after the class time for each subject!), meal times, work schedule if you have a job, extracurricular schedule, etc.  I did so when I was in college, and when the weekend came around, or when I needed a little flexibility during the week, I always was up on my work and could make it--I never had to skip a party, and my friends and I always partied hard during final exam week when everyone else was miserable trying to catch up.

Finally--don't ever hesitate to ask for help at the first sign of difficulty.  Worst that can happen is that you'll hear no, or that the help won't be helpful.

  3. Don't miss class.

Take good notes and review them often.

    Stay organized!

Have some fun but, not too much.  :)
