I'm thinking of taking up running as a form of exercise, do you have any tips on what to look for in a good pair of running shoes? I realize comfort and support are really important but what are other things to look for??

  1. if you want a really good par of running shoes then go to a special sports shop and they will pick out the perfectpair oryou can have them tailer made

  2. we have a shop by us - where they ask you to run on a tread mill and they have a camera record your running style - which they study with you whilst offering advice

they then work out which running shoe would be best for you?

if you want to go down this techy route you can?

if not - just go for something comfortable - with good ventilation

    :o)

  3. WELL DONT GO FOR THE BUFFEST PAIR IN THE SHOP! causee yherr they look the part, and cost the part! but they probably wont play the part!

look at the grip at the bottom of the shoe! and also look at how much support it gives you. the new GEL ones are good shock absorbers, or u can get the ones with the air bubbles, but theyr not as good.

get the nice airyy, light ones! you really dont need the extra weightt!

    good luck! =)

  4. Other things you should look out for are the weight of the shoe and the type of style that suits you foot best.

If your shoe is too heavy it can cause serious long term damage and can also make training harder.

If you have the wrong style of shoe and it doesnt suit your foot right then you will not run as quickly as you possibly can.

Comfort and support are also key factors whch you already know about but I would recommend asics or saucony for this as they are the leading brands and i have tried both, they work for me !!  Hope this helped!

  5. If you're doing this and aren't planning to be too serious about it go to Sport's Authority and get yourself a pair of Nike's or whatever they have there. Make sure it fits though.

But if you're planning on being a serious runner and you enjoy running it is nessesary to invest in good shoes. I ran in a pair of generic adidas shoes when I started running and once I got up to about4 miles, they made my feet bleed.

So I suggest going to a good running shoe store. Fleet Feet is the best by far. Go to one of those if possible.  For me, Asics work the best. They have great cushioning and have shoes for people with every kind of foot. My aunt (a marathoner) prefers Saucony and my friend (also my coach) likes Nike, so it's all about what fits you and what you like.

It shouldn't be too tight or it will hurt your toes. Also, make sure it is wide enough. But the people at Fleet Feet or other running stores can tell you about all of this in detail. And by the way, a good pair of running shoes is upwards of $70. No need to spend over $140 though.

  6. make sure they fit

  7. i like adidas. i dunno if it's just me but they seem to last longer than nike or other shoe brands.

  8. I like Salomons. I have been using them for years. They feel great and don't put any pressure on your knees.

  9. What you are looking for really are comfortable shoes that are made as running shoes - not trainers, cross training shoes, basketball shoes, football boots.......

You can get shoes that are designed depending on how your feet twist as they hit the ground (differnt cusioning etc) and for your firts pair try to get neutral cusioned trainers. If your feet over pronate then you might want to change your first trainers sooner than you would normally (after maybe 6 months)(if you start getting knee problems then take your trainers to a running shop and they should be able to see how your foot twists and suggest trainers that are cusioned properly for that - but you need something for them to look at. I think an Addidas store in London might have analysis (Gait analysis) to do it and they recommend trainers, but taking old trainers long will do the same)

The best place to go to get a first pair is a specialist running store where they will have a range and various makes to try on. If the running shop is good they might have a treadmill to try the shoes on and have a quick run (for example, the shop in the Blue water centre in Kent), or let you jog up and down the street outside (my local shop does that). Trying the shoes like that is important because it shows any obvious places that rub and things like that.

Some people swear by different brands ("I always wear...., so you should too" type of comments), however what fits them well might not fit your feet well so trying them on is important. What is important is that they fit your feet well.

As for cost, a £20 pair might fit you better than the top of the range £100 pair.

  10. You should get some asics, they vary in how they fit the bridge of your foot to provide the best type of support for you. You can also buy different sorts depending on whether you're a road runner or games player.

  11. You need trainers.. Best advice you'll get..

  12. Don't buy into gimmicks, but also u get want you pay for... A good pair of Nike air will last a long time and be good, i have had mine for 2 years
