Me and my boyfriend are redecorating a very dark blue room, we want it a lighter colour. We know it's going to be hard work but i just wondered if there is a sort of primer you could use on the walls?

  1. Use Benjamin Moore Aura Paint, it is guaranteed to cover any color in no more than 2 coats, and I have personally never seen it take more than one.  It is more expensive, but you don't have to buy primers, and it takes much less time.  I have sold it, and used it myself, and I have never seen a higher quality paint.

  2. My husband and I had to paint over a very dark purple room with a permant marker mural of a pot leaf on the wall - we sanded the walls (after filling any holes) then put on a coat of primer.  We used Kilz, because the coverage and ability to cover stains/colors is supposed to be really good.  I think we did 2 coats of Kilz and then we painted the room the way we wanted it.
