Question:

Any tips for potty training a toy poodle?

I just got a toy poodle and I'm having trouble potty training him. I tried watching him to see when he sniffs around, but he's ALWAYS sniffing around! I'm trying to teach him to go on paper, but he doesn't have a schedule yet. I thought most puppies go 1st thing in the a.m., but not him, he goes at different times.

  1. take it slow and put him on a scedule.

    PS.

dont teach him to go on the paper.

    & kennel him/her at night

    :)

    have fun

  2. I would suggest buying potty training pads that you can purches at a pet store. only place one out in a spot where you want your dog to go. If you have more then one out, he will get confused on where you want him to go. continuously place your dog on the potty pad throughout the day. when he goes potty, do not replace the pad. you can remove solids, but leave it there for a day or so, so the scent will stay and he will get the idea that that's where he has to go. some potty pads are already scented. (make sure you praise him when he goes on the pad)

Also, if your dog has an accident, do not rub his nose in it. He will not understand what you want, but he can see that you are mad and act submissive to try to please you.

If you want him to start going outside, start to move the pad towards the door.(move it an inch or so every day). after it is by the door for afew days, move it outsede the door. Make sure he knows where it is. Then move it toward where you want him to go (like on the lawn/dirt) after afew more days, he should not need the pads. you might also want to train him to scratch the door to go outside, or put some bells on the door.

Also limit when your dog eats. make a set scedule of when he will eat. dogs that eat on schedule, p**p on scedule. EX; feed Xcups at 8am and 4pm, if he does not eat whithin 1/2 an hour, put the food away. he will learn that if he does not eat it then, he will not get to eat till later.

    Hope this helps!

  3. don't use paper! It will stink up your house and your dog needs fresh air and go outside! Most puppies need to go out EVERY HOUR after meals, after naps, after play times, lol all the time! If he has all his shots take him for a walk around the block, when my toy poodle bessy was a baby she was a nuisance to potty train, keep tiny tiy treats with you and when he finally goes OUTSIDE praise him, stroke him, and feed treat. You could try crate training but that never seems to work with poodles, not my elmo, bessy, pongo, patches ( my old poodle) none of them took on to crate training. It's okay though Poodles are VERY smart so they will learn quick!

  4. I put out puppy pads in different areas. Try taking him out every couple hours.  Usually they will go to the same place, most the time, so put the pad in that area.  If you see him potting take him, the pad to go, to potty.  If you keep him in a cage at night, when he first gets up take him out.  I hope this helps.  It took a while but Shortstuff does real good now.  When I'm at work 10 hours he will wait for me to come home otherwise he will use his pad.
