Any tips on Returning Baby stuff? Retail help!!!!?

So I have a ton of clothes from my baby shower (seriously no way my kid can wear them all) that have tags on them but no reciepts. I don't know where half of them are from. I have a lot of Carter's which I know you can get at the Carter's store, Wal-Mart, Kohls, and Target but is there a trick to this? Do I really need to go to every store to figure out which outfit has the barcode that matches that store? Hopefully someone who has worked in retail can help me with this and save me some time and gas.

Also, I have a few Baby Beginnings outfits, Sesame Street brand outfits, and Disney outfits. Any clue what stores sell these?

Please help, there is so much money I could get back from these clothes if I just knew where they came from!

  1. When I worked in retail, sometimes people would come in with things from another store. They were just hoping to find where to return their goods. Unfortunately there are not many tricks to figuring out which codes are appropriate to each store. Many stores often use the same UPC codes for their goods. (But have a system in place- certain items with certain codes will show up as unavailable in the system, which means it is from another store)

JC Penney has their own SKU, but aside from that, you are probably at a loss. The best idea is to ask for gift receipts or for the original receipts or to ask the people who gave you the items where they got it from. (I will bet many will be offended that you are returning their gifts though, so reword it- like "I really loved the outfit you got gfor me at the baby shower. Thank you so much. I was wondering where you got it from because I am interested in checking out their selection." Or you can ask this in the thank you cards or notes that you send out to the people who attended)

By the way if you are a first time mother, you will be surprised at how much of this you are going to be buying back. Babies need ALOT of clothes or ALOT of laundering. Unless the huge amount of excess clothes you have are all size newborn, it might be a good idea to keep them until you know that you will not need it. (Kids grow out of "newborn" size so fast. Same goes for every size you will buy from here until the end of puberty)

Also, I worked in retail and it is not true that we will not take your items back without receipts. Although that is the policy, at every store I have worked at (Kmart, JC Penney, big lots) we always gave store credit for items returned without a receipt provided it was actually from our store and that it was not outdated or really old. However, most stores will only credit you the lowest sale price from the past 30-45 days. At JC Penney, we also had the option of crediting your charge account.

  2. Babies'r'us has the best return policy of all of the stores. They will take back anything the carry for store credit. I bet 75% of your clothes could be returned there no problem. Walmart will probably take the other 25%.

Stores like target are worthless for returns. They let you return one item per year without a receipt, and the item must be worth less than $20. Pointless to even go there.

  3. it's useless to go to every store and see where each outfit was purchased because right now a lot of brands like carter's, fisher price, etc have UNIVERSAL bar codes that's why without receipt they won't let you return it.

I would suggest asking the people who came to the baby shower if they still have the receipt or at least a gift receipt....

for my baby shower I registered at babies r us and if you have a registry it's not required to return with a recepit because everything was purchased in the same store from the same list....

    good luck !!

  4. return it

  5. anywhere you go you will not get the money back just gift cards. I did this after my baby shower. I took everything back to walmart and if it isn't some thing they carry they will tell you and try a different store. Make sure you do it all at once cuz some stores have a limit on how many times you can return with out a receipt. Sesame street stuff you can get at Kmart

  6. Most stores will not let you return the clothing if you don't have a receipt. If you do have the receipts there is a return policy that you can normally only return clothes for 3 months after you buy them, after that, you are SOL. If you can figure out where you got them, they might give you a store credit. Good Luck

  7. Walmart will take back anything that they stock, even without a receipt. They will even give cash if it's only a few bucks, otherwise it's a gift card. Target will no longer take ANYTHING without a receipt, so you're out of luck there. I'd take it all to Walmart first, and then try other stores with what's left.

Also, it may seem like a lot, but you may be surprised how many clothes you end up using. They grow very quickly, but between spit up, spilled milk, and p**p, they can also go through several outfits a day, especially as a newborn!

  8. Ok i used to work in a baby furniture specialty store, and with carters brand this can be quite tricky..The reason is because carters makes certain products for certain stores. Like the carter stuff we sold at the store, walmart, target, toysrus, babiesrus, did not sell this stuff, but kohls did. With having no receipts, the only thing that most stores will do is give you store credit. Or an even exchange. If you dont want to go through the hassle of going to each store, use EBAY to sell the stuff. Or as the givers for receipts. Or just keep the clothes and use them anyways...Hey you never know when your gonna have another baby, so you can keep the clothes and reuse them.

  9. Walmart's really good at returning with out receipts.  They'll just give you a store card.  I just returned a stroller/car seat combo someone had given me there, no questions asked.

  10. I just had to return a bunch of stuff that I got duplicate from my baby shower.  The ones that didn't have the gift receipts the store gave me store credit which is fine with me because I still needed a bunch of stuff anyways.  If you returning to Wal-mart or Target then you can always use that money for Diapers and Wipes or whatever else you still need for the baby.

  11. I think your only choice is to ask the gift givers to provide receipts, other than that you'll have to sell them on craigslist or something. Not many stores will take things back without a receipt especially if you're not even sure of what store they came from!

Maybe ask your friends "I have too many outfits of this size, can I get the receipt to exchange for a larger size?"

I think the most useful size range for babies is 6-12 months. At anything less than 6 months, they'll burst out of them in 2 weeks! Babies grow REALLY fast!

  12. I just had my baby shower and tried returning items as well NO ONE will take anything back without a receipt anymore. So Good Luck your better off selling it to a private party on craigslist or something by searching target.com babiesrus.com and walmart.com to get the prices and maybe get a little less money for it i mean you either sell it or keep it but stores wont take it back. Good Luck!

  13. if you go to a store and tell them it was a gift but you dont have a reciept, most stores will let you return them. If the bar code doesnt show up, try the next store lol, its what I would do. You can try to ask for cash back but most stores will only allow store credit. (I would try wal-mart and target first!) If you cant find what you want, try selling them on ebay or something along those lines. Also there are tons of shops, if you look around that do take used baby clothes, so maybe you can make some bucks like that. Garage sales also are nice way to earn back some cash.

Btw-you will be surpise how much clothes a baby goes through. I got TONS of clothes, and figured I wouldnt go through that much, but seriously I change my daughters clothes 3-4 times a day. Between her spitting up, and peeing all over, I suggest keeping lots of them.

  14. I am in the same situation.  Mostly I received the wrong size for the season.  Some items I plan on exchanging, but the others I'll just regift or take to a second hand store.

Also, I think Baby Beginnings come from Meijer and Sesame Street are from K-Mart.

  15. I don't think there is a way especially without receipts.  Most stores will give you store credit though if the outfits did come from those stores.  I would just sell them on ebay or craigslist

  16. I returned some of my stuff at Walmart, no reciept. if it is under $20 you get cash, otherwise they give you store credit. otherwise, sell them on ebay

  17. The first place I went to was wal-mart... I took EVERYTHING, they went through and figured out what came from their store... since I didn't have the receipts thy just gave me a gift card, which came in handy because I just bought what else I needed for my son... then I went to k-mart with the remaining items, they again did the same thing, what I had left after those 2 stores I just kept. But you can try to look the items up on the internet, most will have what stores they are sold in... I just explained that I got them from a baby showed so they understood. Also you will be suprised how many clothes your baby will go through a day!
