Any tips on a home theater system?

Does anybody recommend any specific receivers, speakers, or brands? There are sooo many! My budget is about $1000 for the receiver, 4 speakers, and 1 sub. I was interested in some quality, not over priced name brands like Bose. There are plenty of boxed systems for about $800 but they just seem so cheap for the price! What brand/s of equipment are the best? I am interested in a 5.1 system, with at least a 10 inch sub.

  1. Craigslist!!!!

Sony is overrated but I have it from my parents. They have Bose actually off of craigslist.

  2. theres a panasonic home theater system out. 999 dollars. its a blue ray dvd along with the system of course. it has an amazing sound. i work at sears in electronics and i loveeeee it. ad every person i show it to is amazed at the sound quality.

and the speakers are wireless ready.

  3. well for under $1000 bucks it may be hard to piece together a system that would be as good as if you just bought a boxed set that includes everything. You are right in thinking bose is overpriced. they love to crate the illusion that they are high class but they arent. it seems to work though. anyway, onkyo makes some good systems.

Onkyo HT-SP904 this one will please you and is quite a bit under your budget. that receiver is great. if you bought one separately they would be about as good as that. they kind of cheap out on the front speakers though so maybe you want to spend the money you saved on better front speakers. or you could just buy a receiver and buy the speakers seperatly.

  4. I would have a look at amazon.com for both possible items, in receivers and speaker sets. They have a lot of gear and some very good deals. And, some of the stores that sell through amazon also offer some good gear for good deals.

As an example, they have receivers starting at under $200 for good name brands like Onkyo, and speaker sets from under $300 for the Polk 6750 5.1 speaker model.

As you have some more room in your budget than that, I would suggest doing searches there based on the price and capability levels that best work for what you want.

Yeah, skip Bose, with them, you're paying close to half just for the same and the looks. Also, I would skip boxed systems, as at your price range, you should not have any trouble finding both great speaker sets and great receivers. Brands like Infinity, JBL, Polk and such make great  speakers, and Onkyo, Pioneer, Harmon Kardon and Yamaha make great receivers in your price range.

I'd skip eBay, as you'll be buying used without guarantees.

  5. Onkyo and Yamaha make some very good HT receivers in the $300 range.

Look at Paradigm bookshelf speakers such as their Titans.  Last I looked they ran about $230 a pair

As far as subs go....don't even bother with anything less than 200 watts and a 12" speaker.  Look at Hsu, Klipsch, Paradigm, and Velodyne brands.....you may have to spend $500 on one of these so it might blow your budget.

    $300 + $230 + $230 + $500 = $1260

But I gurantee this little set up will blow away anything from Bose or an All-in-one box set.

  6. My friend and  I were saying how you can spend very little and get an amazing sound.

I know you said no Bose, but with your budget you are so close and Bose is NOT overpriced- go listen!   If you want to spend around $1200, Bose has this AMAZING system, it's called 3-2-1.  http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIE...
