Question:

Any tips on coloring with color pencils?

I'm trying to improve my drawing, but I'm always afraid to color a picture because they say "bad coloring can ruin a good picture", and my pictures are mediocre anyway(so then it'd become a terrible picture). So do you have any tips to make the coloring good? Shading and stuff? I don't know if it matters, but I do a lot of the anime style(stylized and all that).

  1. start off really light (I mean super light) so that you can fix your mistakes easier. Then you can add layer on top of layer, making it darker or adding more dimension.

  2. use photoshop, cleaner for your type of art style. If you do use color pencils, try to be consistent and blend using the white prismacolor pencil to create an almost pastelish appeal. cheers!~

  3. buy prisma color pencils, and you wont have to ask this question. they are soft, and can be blended into eachother very easily.

dark to light (right to left) change pencils dark to light (left to right) until they meet.

  4. Build up layers of colour. This will give you richer and more interesting colours. Start with light ones and build up to darker (for example, colouring orange lightly first, then red on top, allowing some of the orange to show through, for a more fiery red). I suggest practicing layering, blending tones and colours, and other new techniques on blank paper before you start on any drawings, to lessen the likelihood of making an error.

You can find very good tutorials online which will give you more detailed, subject or style specific help. You'll find piles of them on Google to look through. If you like anime, I recommend this one for starters:

  5. pick a direction and colour at that angle, diagonally works for me.

also if you wish to blend colorrs lean less on the pencil when going near the edge of that colours area. try doing the edges first or start at 1 place and work your way around it
