Any tips on having a garage sale?

A couple of my friends and i are planning to have a garage sale before the summer is over. We wanted to know if there are any peticular days of the week to have it, to have it more than one day, and whatever else you know. We obviously want to keep our money separate, and we don't know exactly how to do that either.

I'm planning on selling a lot of clothes, and I don't know how much to charge. I was thinking like two bucks for a shirt, five for a pair of jeans, and then if they want to barter, that's fine. Also, i have an American Girl Doll and a bunch of clothes for it, a gamecube and all of the accessories, and some shoes. i don't know what to charge for these either. So if you have any tips at all, please help out!!

  1. Be considerate of your neighbors when having a garage sale.  Let them know you're having one.  Keep an eye open to see if any "customers" park their car across a neighbor's driveway, possibly blocking them in.

  2. i love having garage sales! it is so much fun.  Ok, on the pants you may want that to differ per pair.  But 5 for a good pair sounds fine.  Also, put the clothes out noticeably but people will only want to stop if they see a lot more than clothes.  So put things like tables, toys, shoes , and other things out to be more noticeable.  It sounds like you have a good selection goin on.  Put tape or a sticker on each article of clothing with your initials.  So say your initials were SH, your friend's is LM, and anothers is KR.  Have 3 differnt pieces of paper so when people go to pay you take off the price sticker and put it on the piece of paper that you have set up to match the initial.  Then, at the end of the day you all just add up the money on your sheet!  Good Luck

PS.  days of the week.... Saturday from 7-2  or during the week from 8-4 maybe 2 or 3 days.

  3. thursday, friday, and saturday are the best days for yard sales

  4. I have had several garage sales and I have found that I got 10 times more people on Thursday and Friday than I got on Saturday. 9-4 also seems to be the best times.

Too keep $ separate I would put little price tag stickers on everything and put the owners initials on the tag. Then when you are adding up the sale take the sticker off and put on a piece of paper. Then at the end of the garage sale you can add up what everyone made.

I think the prices you have set for the clothing is pretty good. For the other things I would look on eBay and see what similar products in the same condition as yours are going for.

Also, don't forget to hang up some signs and put some balloons on your mailbox!

    Good luck!

  5. Sandia -

The best time to do garage/yard sales are on Fridays and Saturdays. Also, if you can plan it for the first 2 weekends of the month you will do better. The reasoning is that people usually have more money the first 2 weeks of the month than the do the last 2 weeks of the month.

To keep money separate the easiest way to do this is to label everything with stickers that have the prices on the item and then the persons initials that the item belongs to. So a sticker would have say $1 - S. (The price then your initial if it was your item) When an item is sold simply take the sticker off the item and put the sticker in a notebook. This way you have track of how much money each person should have at the end of the day. Remember to make note if you take a lower price for something.

Change - Make sure you start the day off with enough change. We usually try to do $100 in cash(50 -$1s, 6-$5s, 2-$10s) and then $25.00 in coins.

Prices - Try to keep things as low as possible, remember people are looking for bargains. Never be offended when someone ask if you could do a better price. Work with people and you'll end up making money instead of losing it because you were too cheap to come down on the price. Clothing I would price low but price a little higher for name brand clothes.

The Gamecube and accessories I would price at $30 -$40. If you have games I would price them at $5.00/game.

Also, something that people neglect to do is advertise. THIS WILL MAKE OR BREAK YOU. The person who advertises their sale the best will do the best.

Hope this helps and good luck!
