  1. Cut the thermostat up to 78.

    Wash clothes in cold water.

    Hang clothes on the line.

    Use ceiling fans.

    Change to fluorescent lights.

Unplug all things that don't you don't use on a daily basis. Clock, radio, printer etc. "Vampire gadgets"

Monitor your electric meter for a couple of days. Read in the morning and night. Write down the temperature too, so you can get a better reading and try to pinpoint what might be causing the spike.

Check the temperature on your water heater.

Eat meals that can be fixed with little heat, salads and sandwiches, use the microwave.

I forgot to add keep your curtains or blinds closed during the heat of the day. Open them in the winter to let heat in.

  2. The most electric user is AC, refrigerator, extra freezer in the garage. Actually freezer in your garage does not save you money by buying things on sale by the family pack. In the long run, it costs you more money rather than buying as you need them. AC is a huge consumer of electricity. Raise your thermostat a few degrees and use a fan in combination.

Also do you know about electric leakage? All your electronic equipment is using small amount of electricity 24/7. It's in standby mode so your remote can turn it on/off. You add up all this equipment and it adds up to make an impact on your electric bill. Use a AC distribution strip and turn it off to these electric suckers.

  3. switch off all appliances from the socket and try the best as you can to not leave stuff on standby

if you use a laptop or any mobile devices wait till you fully drain the battery before you charge and charge till full power when you do

  4. I started hanging my clothes outside to dry, and my bill went down 60 bucks!!

  5. Turn your water heater down to 125 degrees or lower. Make sure your AC is adjusted to only a comfortable setting and don't overcool your place. Use the microwave not the range for the most of your cooking. If you have to bake anything use a small convection oven not the range. Wash clothes only when you have a completely full load. Don't leave lights on when they are not needed. Don't bake in the summer time in the oven. Set the refrig to a medium setting. Turn the AC off when you're not home. .....GIB

  6. Use fans instead of AC, especially at night when you can have it facing you b/c you aren't moving around.  Turn off/unplug all outlet bars that you're not using, including single plugs for computers, microwaves, radio etc.  Turn off lights when you leave the room.  Replace all your lightbulbs with energy efficient ones.  When you're cold, put on layers instaed of turning on the heater.  Don't stand in front of the refridgerator with the door open.  Wash most clothing in cold water (except towels to kill more bacteria in hot water).  Use natural lighting whenever possible by opening the blinds/window.  Best wishes!
