Any tips on moving my finger more smoothly on the electric guitar?

When I take my finger off of a note it makes another sound. Like when I lift my finger off it plays that string again. Any tips on how to stop that? Or to move my fingers better on the guitar?

  1. Dont lift the string by pulling away from the guitar, make a quick upward motion, and after your finger has left the first string, move onto the second one. What your doing on accident is actually a pull off, which is like a backwards hammer on. Practice makes perfect, remember that.

    Follow these.

Basic exercises. They helped me out when I first started out.

    Hope this helps

    :)

  3. You could try using Elixer coated strings, they are a bit pricy though. I have had great sucess with just rubbing down the fretboard with GHS fast fret once a day before I play.

    Hope this helps..

  4. I have to give it to guitarmaps, as Elixer strings are pricey but worth it, and I too use GHS fast fret. Its a very different feel on the strings, but I think you would love it.

The sound you are making is either a harmonic, or a pull off.

    Harmonic:

Is actually because you are "pulling off" and then stopping the string on a certain fret. To stop it, make sure you stay as close to the middle of the fret while playing as possible, and when you go to lift your fingers, dont set them back on the string without fully pressing down.

The revered "pull-off" is actually a skill that you will learn to hone and have in your bag of tricks. To stop this, don't "drag" your finger off the side of the string while you're still holding the note, just lift straight up.

And don't worry, you'll get it down. As with everything, it just takes a few tips and some time.

  5. To play smooth you must first RELAX!

If you can relax your mind, and your hand and fingers, you will release the tension that is preventing you from moving quickly and smoothly between strings. Anticipation can also cause this.

It is like this with most stringed instruments.

  6. Sprinkle lightly some talcum powder on your left hand and fingertips. See if that makes a difference for you.
