  1. Pack earlier.   oooOOOO

  2. Hire a moving company :)

  3. Start packing what you can way in advance.

If you are already living alone or with each other and no one else and have left over food bring it to the neighbors instead of throwing it out unless of course its cereal or something you can bring with you.

Buy one of those big $10 packs of sharpies (walmart, target, kmart, not hard to find) and color code the boxes for what goes where.

    For instance:

write kitchen in big red letters

    bathroom in big pink letters

living room in big blue letters etc

you can also use corresponding stickers for this (i read about that once apples for the kitchen fun things that have to do with that room.

Start early so you don't need to rush.

  4. Pack EVERYTHING in boxes.  Don't leave anything unpacked.

Mark the boxes prominently with the room in the new house where they should go, e.g. kitchen, BR1, BR2, etc.

Also, mark the boxes with what they contain, so you know which to unpack first.

Good  luck in your new city!!

  5. definitely hire movers.

    Get LOTS of boxes.

Before you start packing sort through your stuff and throw out / give away stuff you really don't need or don't use. Especially clothes, linens and kitchen items.

If you are moving soon start by packing all of your off season clothes and holiday decorations.

Schedule packing and wrapping of fragile and decorative items.

If you are hoping for help from friends with vehicles make sure you have   back up. I have heard horror stories of no one showing up

If you are doing it yourself talk to the staff where you are renting your truck they will have lots of advice.

Leave out your vacuum and cleaning supplies so they are last taken and first unpacked

  6. As you pack the boxes, label them according to the room they're intended for and contents. Also note any special contents that you're going to potentially want to use before you're totally unpacked.

If you have a lot of boxes, wear some sort of glove as your hands get sore. Get a handtruck to help load boxes and heavy items. When lifting, bend from the knees so youre not exhausted and sore.

Use things you want to take with you anyway to wrap up items. Use towels for fragile items, or washcloths. Theyre great packing and arent a pain to dispose of at the end.
