Question:

Any tips on "2's" spiking, topspin serve? Does snapping wrist help?

I play VB at a High School and I need help. I've been having problems with spiking the ball.. but most likely I believe it's my approach since last year I was outside, and this year I'm a middle.

Concerning about spiking and topspin serves.. I'm not quite sure if I'm doing them correctly. Can you please explain how to do them correctly? By the way.. does snapping the wrist help increase the speed when topspin serving and also in serving?

Thanks in advance.

  1. yes snapping your wrist helps. the faster your armswing the harder you hit the ball!

  2. Snapping the wrist is *key*, is a Must.

When you serve or hit, do a snap and follow through will put more power into your hit, and generate a more powerful topspin.

You may also try serving a floater with no snap and no follow through. Sometimes it gives you more Aces as it is a little more unpredictable.

MB jumps closer to the net, better hit over the net... while OH jumps 5 feet away and hit 3 feet away from the net. In both situations you will want to jump **behind** the hitting spot, not "under" (which is seen with most basketball players who also play volleyball).

  3. If your playing middle timing is the most important thing. Take of right when the setter sets the ball and jump when the ball reaches its highest peak. flicking the wrist always helps as you want the ball to go straight down.

For serves, snapping the wrist does nothing really as serving and spiking are different. For serves you want them to go up a little and make it over the net, usually flicking your wrist will cause it to go down. Use your full arm and rotate it giving the ball more power so that the speed will increase. Topspins are really hard to do and if you can do them that's great. Hope this helps and Good luck!

  4. timing the ball is key.

and snapping your wrist helps SOOO much.

make sure when your spiking the ball your hand gets on top of it otherwise the hit wont be all that great and middle hits happen so much faster then on the outside so timing is key.

i dont really have much advice to give since i also play outside and rarely play middle but i hope i helped :]

  5. Executing 2's:

The approach is the key in executing 2's.  Different teams and setters have different height for 2's but generally, you should stand just outside the 10' line and take off when the setter gets the ball.  The approach should be as quick as it can be.  Don't take off too early and wait for the ball or do the slow approach because you don't want the opponent blockers to know where you are long before you attack the ball.  You should wait until you have just enough time to get to the ball at your highest reach.  Also, quick approach helps you jump higher and hit harder.  You should work this out with your setter.

    Jump Serve:

Think of jump serving as 30' attack.  You should use the same motion and armswing as you would do when you attack at the net or at the 10' line.  Of course, you have to use your wrist snap for more power and top spin.

Most important thing in jump serving is setting up yourself perfectly and consistently.  You should toss it high enough for you to take the approach and do full armswing but be consistent with the height and location of the toss.

When you make it perfectly, remember exactly how it has been set and try to toss it the same way next time on.

    Good Luck.
