  8. The 400 meters is one of the longest sprints, in theory you should be able to run it almost flat out the entire way

When running the 400 it is best to get a quick start but not a full burst, do not got go all out early or you will pay in the end, coast the first straight away until you are about half way around the final curve and then make your move ,all out sprint to the finish line.

How fast you run a 400 meter race depends on your strength, fitness level and the level at which you are competing. Athletes in great shape will want to push themselves hard from the start of the race, thereby achieving the lowest possible time. Young athletes (such as 7th graders, 8th graders, 9th graders, etc.) usually need to pace themselves in the 400 meter race so they have enough stamina to complete the race and therefore do not go at an all-out pace until the very end of the race.

You know you have pushed yourself to the limit when you feel like you are on the verge of passing out in the last 50 to 80 meters of the race. and when you are gasping for air and can hardly stand up when you cross the finish line.

For athletes in junior high and high school, some of the best training tips are: (1) Concentrate on building your speed...AND...strength. (2) Lifting weights at a moderate poundage with numerious repititions (20 to 40) is a good way to build up your strength for the 400 meter race. Work all areas of your body, including the legs. (3) In practice, run short sprints at the desired target speed. For example, if your goal is to run 400 meters in 56 seconds, trying running 50 meters at 7 seconds...and...doing multiple sets of 10. Take a small rest break inbetween each sprint but push yourself thru each set of 10. This will get you accustomed to running at the desired pace, help increase your speed and gradually build up your endurance. This can be extended to 100 meters at 14 seconds, 200 meters at 28 seconds, etc. Use your heart rate as a gauge to determine if you need to push yourself harder or to back off while training. (4) Completely rest the day before a race. (5) Have plenty of food energy in your body before a race (i.e., drink a Mountain Dew 30 minutes before you run) and (6) most importantly, be psyched up to give it your best shot when the gun goes off.

The 400 meter race is grueling at the very end, such as the last 50 to 100 meters. The best advice is to just tough it out...keep your legs and arms moving...and focus on the finish line getting closer and closer with each step. As you train, you will discover at which point is the best place to begin your all-out "kick" to the finish line.

NOTE: Olympic-calibre athletes pretty much run the 400 meters all out from the starting line to the finish line. This is why they are able to run the 400 meters in the mid 40-second range. The world record is currently held by Michael Johnson at 43.18 seconds which is an incredible feat for any human being. Years later, you will see the best thing about training for the 400 meters is the self-discipline and determination it instills within you which lasts thruout life.

  9. Practice a lot

    Drink fluids before the race

  10. practice alot !!! loll good luck =D

  11. i must say the 400 is one of my favorite races...i prefer the 4x400 to the open 400 but that is just my opinion...when i run it, my first goal is the get out...if you are running the open, or lead off leg you dont have the concern of being boxed in, but if you run the second third or fourth leg of the 4x400 then you need to make sure you have room to get around people. At the beginning take off at a pretty fast pace..maybe as fast as 85 or 90%..run this fast about the first 100-150 meters (depending of your endourance) then settle for a while, focus of staying relaxed..don't over stride or move your arms too high (like above your face) you should be able to just barely see your thumbs out of the bottom of your eye..i like to focus on my breathing, and even say a small prayer when i get to this point in the race..once you get to the second curve, start picking up the pace..it will feel like you are going a lot faster, when in reality you are staying at the same speed or possibly even slower..just push through to the finish like (or handoff) don't think about the burning lactic acid until the race is over..once its dont you will know you ran the race hard enough if you feel like you cannot move a single muscle in your legs...also, your first 200 is usually faster than your second 200...there should be a difference of about 1.5 to 2 seconds (any less and you didn't go out hard enough...any more and you went out too fast) good luck

  12. Imagine a grizzly bear is chasing you. If you can convince yourself that it is true, you will win the race.

  13. Youll want to attack and be agressive the first 50 meters and keep quick and smooth arms to maintain that speed for the next 200 meters. anywhere in between the 100-200 meters left  (whatever distance youve been trained into shape to run) you kick it and give everything youve got. Dont try to conserve you will get left but dont go all out the whole time or youll most definetly die and then get left. Its a race that requires a lot of heart and you cant just go into it without being exicited you gotta get yourself up and motivated. Make sure you stretch your buttcheeks after. Hurts BAD XD

  14. Pretend your running on hot coals.
