Any tips on running the mile with asthma?

Okay, so I am currently in the middle of volleyball tryouts and tomorrow I have to run the mile. Today I ran it (for practice) and got ten minutes. I have athletic induced asthma and it really gets hard for me. I am not overweight at all (100 lbs. at 5'0") it's just that asthma gets in the way. I use my inhaler beforehand, it works a little. Any tips on how to get a better time than 10 minutes?

  1. well i am a runner. 14yo.

    i have excersiced induced asthma.

it was hard for me at first but then i got the hang of it.

when i went to cross country camp they taught me alot about running with asthma.

    -----------------------------

first of all use your inhaler 30 minutes before at least.

    also drink alot of water.

    -----------------------

    focus on your breathing.

    dont breath in fast.

breath in slowly because you get more air in your lungs.

try it out right now and you will be able to tell the difference.

    -----------------------

take big strides and increase the amount of time on your foot from you heal to your toe. you are going the same speed its just less pounding and it helps your breathing.

    ---------------------

i always carry my inhaler with me when i run.

but i cant stress enough to just really focus on your breathing and taking slow breaths and you will be fine.

    --------------------

the getting the better time part...

dont walk when you are running the mile it makes you more tired when you start again.

    -------------------

dont think about your asthma and think you are doing bad... it gets to you.

    ------------------

dont doubt yourself some of the most amazing runners have asthma... you can still run great with is just focus on managing it.

    -----------------

well thats all i got for you so i hope it helps and i wish you the best of luck =)

sorry its a little scrambled... i was trying to remember everything i was told to help me out!

  2. stride out and take deep breaths

  3. follow up with your pulmonologist.  you need to be on the best maintaince inhaler for your needs.  continue to use your rescue inhaler before running, add liquid magnesium to your diet, and do as the doctor orders!
