  1. Good choice.... the Teddy Bears are the best to have.

    Never wake a sleeping hamster.

Make sure you have a suitable cage and toys, especially an exercise ball... they need to be active or they will suffer from paralysis.

Always change food and water daily.

Keep children/pets away, unless carefully supervised.

They're pretty easy to take care of.... make sure you have playtime with them.... usually best in the evenings when they're awake.

  2. well you would need a suitable sized cage , a brush to brush its long fur , some fun toys and some yummy treats that will keep it happy also teddy bear hamsters rarley bite and like to be handled aslo they are best kept alone.hope this helped !!!! :)

  3. The Biggest thing is to keep him warm i went through 10 Teddy Bear Hamsters in one year because the area i was keeping them was really cold make sure you change his cage every week with care fresh bedding not wood chips because they can cause breathing problems or the hamster could get a stick in their eye. Feed them every two days because they stash the food so let him or her get through the food he has first. Change the water everyday! NEVER give him or her wet food like Veggies or Fruits even though you would think they would like them it gives them diarrhea give him or her only hamster food! Make sure the animal get plenty of exercise with a exercise ball and a wheel inside of his or her cage! Make sure the wheel is solid and has no rungs like a ladder be case those hurt the hamsters feet! NEVER wake your hamster up they get cranky and bite you would too! If you have any other pets make sure they are comfortable with the new animal before letting the hamster run around in his exercises Ball I really do recommend an exercise ball you can put the hamster in it when you are cleaning its cage! Never drop the hamster down the stairs or at all because that leads to brain damage remember the little guy is a living thing treat it as you would treat another human being it is part of your family now! Hope this will help you out!

  4. Teddy bear hamster is just the name for A syrian hamster .

Anyway u need a good sized cage preferably a 20 gl long tank with a good sized wheel preferably a 7.5 inch - 8.0 inch comfort wheel. A sleeping house i find igloos are the best thing for that wich you can definatley get from petsmart or petco ect. Now as for bedding id advise either carefresh softsorbent or aspen shavings due to pine shavings in the usa being harmful for the hamster i dont know if there is any conclusive proof of this. But its best to be safe then sorry . You shoudl also put some tissue or kitchen paper in the hamsters igloo for it to sleep with and in the hot weather put a flowerpot or a tile in the fridge and lay it down in the cage so the hammy can cool down. when on journeys a bottle is most likely to leak. So just give your hamster lots of veg like cucumber until you arrive at your destination.

And also IMO dwarves are very mis understood. I have had a dwarf and its all about taming if you tame them correctly and have a bit of patience they can be just as nice as syrians

  5. I Currently Own A Teddy Bear Hamster, His Name Is Skye. He Is Easy To Take Care Of But As You Know They Have Long Hair And Need Regular Grooming. They Are Big And Energetic. Play With Them In The Evening and try not to wake them up when they are asleep. for more information you could surf the net or ask your vet when your on a check up!

Good Luck With you and your hammy!

  6. My girl and I had one for over 3 years.  I'm just assuming you have nothing for it.  You need a nice cage, plenty of wood chip bedding, food, treats, a little wooden hideout for it, a wheel (for it to run), chew toys (wood) and a water bottle.  Then just make sure you replace the bedding on a regular basis, usually about every other week.  Also, make sure the hamster always has water, food, and wooden chew toys.  I suggest some sort of a hideout place for it inside the cage because I read that they like to have shelter and a place to sleep.  I bought everything we have for it at a local pet store.  Once you've bought all of the stuff I've mentioned above, it's fairly inexpensive and easy to take care of.  Make sure you play with it when you can and you have a wheel for it to do excercise or it will end up being lethargic and sick.  Enjoy it, because the teddy bear hampsters are the cutest.  Email me if you have any other questions or if I wasn't clear on something!  Good luck!!

  7. Don't fret, you'll do just fine.  ^^

They're really simple.  It's nice he got you a Teddy Bear hamster though, because they're the nicest of most all the breeds of hamsters and, in my opinion, they cutest!

    Think basic:

They need fresh food and water as well as a nice place to live.  Every week, perhaps on your day off, clean the cage by emptying the soiled bedding and wiping down the cage with a damp cloth if needed.  Dry it, refill the cage, and give new food and water.

It's probably best that, even if neither are empty, to get rid of the old food and give them completely fresh food and water.  A hamster will pick at the freshest food available and leave the old food.  To avoid feeding them too much and wasting some food, give them a little less.  You can always give them more during the week.  ;P  Same for water.   ^^

Now think a little more comfortable:

Give your hamster Healthy Pet or Care Fresh.  Those are typically hypoallergenic beddings (yes, hamsters can be allergic to different types of beddings).  They will also make the most comfortable nests.

Perhaps get them a house.  It's all about preference.  Some hamsters will sleep in a home and some will just nest outside in a corner.

Either is okay, but they do NEED something to chew on to keep their teeth down.  Whether they're little peach sticks from the pet store (I wouldn't recommend getting anything from outside) or something like a little wooden home or toy for them to chew on.  If their teeth get too long, they can't eat and will need to be taken to the vet to get filed.

You can get them fluff from pet stores to make a nest with or you can give them unscented tissues to use as nesting material.  Personally, I don't think they have much a preference.

    Think healthy:

You pet will need to maintain a healthy diet and emotional status.  If a pet is unhealthy, it can be from a lack of happiness.

Get it an exercise ball.  It'll give you somewhere to keep the hamster while you're cleaning his or her cage and give him some free time to run around.  Don't let them get trapped in direct sun light or on a vent, both can be fatal.  Also, don't leave them in for too long.  No more than thirty minutes at one time, ever.

Get him a wheel.  I wouldn't recommend plastic.  From experience, they just pee in them which makes them smell and even a fresh cage smell HORRIFIC.  They are often times hard to rid of that smell as well since the plastic will absorb or hold onto part of that scent.  A wire or mesh wheel will be fine because they don't really run and won't hurt themselves on it.  It's also a nice exercise source and stress reliever.

Treats!  Everyone feels a little happier having something they just LOVE!  Hamsters will eat about anything, but that doesn't mean everything is safe.  Don't give them too many either, that can lead to them getting over weight and developing lung problems.  Beware, too much fresh food is bad though!  Too much can result in a hamster getting diarrhea.  Simply stop that though and he'll go back to normal in a few days.  ^^

Safe things  to give them include:

    baby carrots

    apple slices

    raisins

    raw peanuts

    dry roasted, unsalted peanuts

    celery

    dried fruit

(( this is not a complete list but a basic one ))

    Think friendly:

Unfortunately, taking good care of your hamster may not ensure that he is the nicest.  This requires something called bonding.

To bond with a hamster, hold it daily and play with it in your hands.  It is recommended that you hold your hamster around the same time every day at first so it can develop a sense of routine which is less stressful on it.

Neglecting to hold your hamster will result in it becoming unsocial, angry, stressed, and mean.  It will bite and run away from your hand when you try to hold it.  It would be much easier to just tame it right off the bat than tame an angry hamster.

I've raised many happy hamsters from these standards over the years and these basic tips have proved to help with other rodents and pets in general.
