  1. I would suggest that you have wide open spaces, particularly by the entrance and water fountain if you have one in your class. Have at least two or three ways to get to his/ her desk, preferably by the entrance. Have "areas" set up in one side of the class and desks on the other to allow the wheelchair to move freely. Or, have the desks in the middle and "areas" in the outside, with enough room. Make sure they have access to the teacher's desk. Inclusiveness is important so have the child surrounded by others, but in case of emergency you do need the practicality of easy access to the door. Good luck!


  2. -Lots of space to move around the tables/chairs

    -At every table have a space where there isnt a chair so child can access table top activities.

    -Have a tray attached to wheel chair if possible as child can reach easier when doing written work.

    -Doors should be uncluttered so child can easily get in and out.

    -Layout everyday things on lower levels sides not high up shelves or in cupboards.

    Depending on the age of the child you could invite them and parents in too have a look and they can give you more advice based on childs needs/abilities.

  3. i am in a wheelchair so it's my opinion based on what i go through, is the classroom set up like in rows? if so u wanna make the rows wide enough so a wheelchair and a normal student can get through. the desks should be adjustable so u can make it to the child's height so the chair can fit under it. u wanna have things on low shelving so the child can reach, there should be spaces open around the room so the child can move to the front of the room or where ever.

    i would get them a grabber in case they drop something and want to pick it up.

    can they get to yr desk?

    ** do they have  easy access to the door in an emergency!!**

    do they have desk their height or is there another surface they use to write on?

  5. Put the child in an aisle somewhere near the middle of the action so that he/she becomes a working part of the class. No outside aisle for convenience . Also have the children assist the person in the wheel chair getting to and from the room. This might give them an appreciation of what some more unfortunates have to endure.
