Question:

Any tips/steps to making hay?

I have a large piece of land with just grass and have been finding myself cutting it at least 2 times a month for 2 hours at a time (using an X500). I thought it would be worthwhile to start making some hay, because I also have other fields around my house which already have grass on them now. From what I have seen from local farmers:

-let the grass grow tall (what's the best type of grass?)

-cut it

-let it dry

-use a special attachment to put it into larger piles

-use the hay baler attachment

Is all of this right "basically"? Thank you.

  1. Yes just cut(at about 1 foot high),rake.and bale. But it is worthless if it isn't fertilized,or gets too wet before bailing.

  2. Timothy,.Alfalfa and clover. You want to  cut it when you have a few rain free days to dry and bale Rain causes mold and decreases the hays value and don't pack the bale too tightly together in the barn this can cause spontaneous combustion as can baling before your hay is dry. Good luck Great smell new mown hay!
