Question:

Any tips to improve my right turns when driving?

I'm a new and un experienced driver and I just got my permit. For the first time today I finally got to drive on the streets but when I went to make my first right turn, I went to fast and almost crashed. Then I did the same with all my other right turns but my left were fine. Is it because I'm new and this was my first time actually driving, or is it because I can't see the right side of the car?

Advice?

  1. I would say use your brakes to slow down when making a right turn.Go to an area where there is little or no traffic and keep practicing that's what will make a difference. Get used to the accelerator and the brakes.

  2. Take a deep breath - with practice, this will become 2nd nature.

From the driver's position on the left side of a car, the right corner is hard to see, due to it's distance, angle and hood & fender which usually drop off on today's aerodynamic body styles.

Try practicing right hand turns in a large, empty parking lot,  such as at a high school or junior college parking lot on a weekend.   First, make broad right turns at slow speeds, with a large turning radius and try to develop an understanding of various right turn approaches.

Then, work into sharp right turns to see how tightly your car can turn a 90 degree turn.  Practice at slow speeds to develop a good feel for your car's turning response at different turning radii and you will quickly build confidence in your ability to control your car through various turns.

  3. its because your new. Dont worry you'll get it down in time.

A good speed for a right turn is 10-15 MPH. Trust your spedometer, not the other cars for accurate speed!

Little adjustments can make the car turn, dont make TOO sharp of a turn

Practice right turns alot, and you'll get it down in a week or two.

  4. turning right onto a junction is always the most difficult. Approach the junction, but remember to line yourself up correctly, leaving room for cars behind who may be turning left. signal and look left and right, if there are parked cars tree and bushes etc then slowly move forward to get a better look, this is fine as long as you leave enough room for cars to pass, ( without making them move out of their lane) now once you see it's clear, or you find a gap, move out, but always keep looking left and right. Some times, a car may stop and flash you, 99% of the time that means the driver is giving up his/her right of way to allow you room to move out, wait until the car slows down, then Finlay look left, if it's clear move out, and it's polite to give a little wave to the kind driver. Always remember to keep calm, if there is a que behind, don't worry, just be safe and take your time.
