Any tips when moving to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil?

Question

I will probably be moving to Rio De Janeiro (Brazil) in the future to set up a high demand business, and since I have to live there to manage it, (1) which part of Rio can I live in?(as in which district is the most foreigner friendly?) (2) How should I get used to the crime situation in Brazil? (3) In that district, are there Western style supermarkets/stores/malls & accessibility to all basic necessities? (4)What is the business etiquette in Brazil and how is the cost of living in Brazil? (5)any other things I should know before and after I move to Brazil (other than learning Portuguese, which I'm currently studying)? You can answer everything or any of the part-questions. hello i am brazilian! BUT i dont live in rio (i've travelled there once though) n.n' but i can aswer a few things!! well here in brazil, you have to pay for school (public schools are horrible, they dont even teach u how to read) so if u have children look for a private school! about the crime, well, u really need to go to rio? if u wanted to go to a more peaceful place u could go to curitiba or porto alegre(but since u're going for business, i dont think u can choose)

you must also have health insurance 'cause public hospitals aren't better than the public schools... where do u come from? 'cause rio de janeiro is hot all year long, so get used to the climate! (must have air conditionator) and the taxes are kinda high here thigs like cars, ipods, and such

brazilians tend to help a lot the foiregns, speacially ppl who you will work with, but watch for the pickpockets on the strets!

but i believe that you will be wel received even though all of that, we are very friendly^^ and that "only drink bottled water thing" is not true (at least here in são paulo)

i dont know rio very well, but these are good supermarkets: carrefour, big, pão de açúcar (high quality, the other are cheaper though, but this one is not expensive, here's where i go shopping) if u want to buy books or dvds or such, look for a livraria cultura (it has everything) or a fnac (also sells computer stuff)

u might have problems on the airport (not because u're not from here, we all have problems there) its just that once in awhile fliths get canceled or fly later than they should (flight controller get on strike now and then), so bring ur pacience and a book, just in case, it doens't always happens, but u never know

if u were coming to são paulo i'd be more helpful... hehe about were to live inside rio, i would recomend a place away from the "favelas" (where drug traficants live) places like copacabana beach aren't as beautiful as it used to be, other than that i dont know what to say..

but to finish brazil is not like u see in the movies or tv, if u wacthed the movie "turistas" know that nothing there is true (its a pathetic movie), there will be no snakes or monkeys on the streetsor such... any uestion i might be able to answer or not, just in case my email is [e-mail] (i know its a stupid email, but i made it when i was at the 5th grade)

Be careful, in Rio de Janeiro now, have problem health. So many people dead with illness DENGUE. Until army help now coz dont have hospital enough

Where bright colors this will make you look less like a foreigner and less likely to be robbed. Also make sure whatever you do stay out of The City of God (trust me), don't go anywhere near it, it is a very dangerous community. It is more dangerous than Watts during the race riots and you do not want to put yourself in such a compromising position. But aside from that you'll enjoy it, the beach is wonderful make sure you go (don't be alarmed by the thong bathing suits this is the norm). Go to the carnival (you'll love it, but don't wear shorts with pockets while you are there also don't wear expensive jewelry while you are there) it like the mardi gras X 10. But most of all have fun and make the best out of it. Most people are very friendly.

You should live in the South Zone (Zona Sul), the rich side, in neighbours like Copacabana, Botafogo, Flamengo, Ipanema or Leblon. I live in Copacabana and recomend it. The crime situation isn't as serious as they say, you have to be careful about your value stuff and not to walk in very empty places. There's everything you need in Rio, you won't have problem finding your stuff. You can live comfortably here with less than US$2k per month. The business etiquette is much like USA, so it's okay. Just relax, people here are very friendly. You won't have problems finding your group.

Leblon is where you should live. It is a great place, but anywhere else is risking especially when you are a blond blue eyed american like myself. Still, I am happy for you. If Clinton or Obama win the presidency,,,,,,,,,,many of us will be joining you, seriously...............another "balancing" of the global economy as our best leave the states with there equity.
