Thousands.  You might be thinking strictly in terms of places like McDonalds, where they do almost everything but eat dinner for you. The alternative is a grocery store, where you choose the ingredients and put them together.

Genealogy is a rewarding hobby. It is NOT punching your name in, and finding a ready made family tree.  The Library of Congress is not a "genealogy" site..but you may well find an ancestor there.

There IS some cost to research.  What is offered on the 'fee' sites is important to your search, and you would pay for it, if you spend gas/ time to go to a library to find it.  It actually can wind up being less expensive to pay for a valid service, if it gets the records to you.

Educating yourself is free. And people here to help along the way, is free (unless you count the cost of your internet provider).

  2. familysearch.org

this is the Mormon site.  they collect information becasue they believe that they must find all of their ancestors or they might not get saved.  they are VERY BIG into Genealogy.
