  1. old televisions (the ones with cathode ray tubes) use phosphor coted glass. the electrode hitting the glass, gets its light from the phosphor.

  2. it was first produced by concentrating volumes of urine I believe.

    Yup, Wiki shows:

Phosphorus (Greek phosphoros was the ancient name for the planet Venus, but in Greek mythology, Hesperus and Eosphorus could be confused with Phosphorus) was discovered by German alchemist Hennig Brand in 1669 through a preparation from urine, which contains considerable quantities of dissolved phosphates from normal metabolism. Working in Hamburg, Brand attempted to create the infamous Philosopher's stone through the distillation of some salts by evaporating urine, and in the process produced a white material that glowed in the dark and burned brilliantly. Since that time, phosphorescence has been used to describe substances that shine in the dark without burning.

  3. As an element, it often occurs in a tetramer (groups of four atoms = P4) and comes in several allotropic forms usually named for their colors (White or Yellow, Red and Violet or Black).

The White or Yellow allotrope will catch fire (spontaneous combustion) if exposed to air.

The name for the element comes from the Greek word "phosphoros" meaning "bringer of light".  The pure isolated phosphorus glows in the dark.

A 100 pound person contains almost 500 grams of Phosphorus, most of which is composed in the form of Phosphates.

Pure White or Yellow Phosphorus is very toxic to humans as little as 50 mg can cause death or severe poisoning.

Phosphorus was first isolated (from urine) in 1669 by German physician Hennig Brand.  It was the very first element found which was not known to ancient civilizations.  This makes it the first modern element isolated.

Oddly enough, one of the first commercial uses of Phosphorus was the manufacture of matches (Bringer of light?).
