Any university teachers out there ? Or anyone BECOMING a university teacher ? ?

So I'm going into gr. 11 and i just wanted to know how long you had to go to university to become a UNIVERSITY TEACHER.. And are there any specific class's I have to take in high school to go into this domaine.

If someone could even provide me with more specific details that would really be apreciated :)

My husband is a university teacher, he needed to get his PhD to do it. You get a degree in the field that you wish to teach.

If you want to teach at a 4 yr. research university, you will need to go get a Ph.D. A Ph.D takes a long time to get. It took me 4 years after receiving a Master's degree to get mine. I was always a full-time student through the process. It really depends on the program and how fast you and the bureaucratic educational system works.

If you want to teach at a community college, you will probably need to obtain a Master's degree to qualify for teaching jobs. You need to decide early on where you would like to teach (community college or 4 yr. university).

Choose a subject you are passionate about and major in it. It will take you less time to finish if you stick with the same subject. Make sure you choose your graduate school wisely! Find someone in a department that has interests similar to yours and ask them to mentor you. Mentors are key to survival in graduate school. Be sure to diversify yourself as much as possible. Do not go to the same school for all your degrees, schools like to see that you adapt to change well.
