  1. I have 12X12 granite tile, and I hate it.  Debris is always stuck in the cracks, even though they are butted tightly together.  It is also very dark in color, so you cannot see any food particles on the counter to keep it clean.  Tile and grout in the kitchen are not a good choice.

  2. I have 4" x 4" ceramic tile countertops and I hate, hate, hate them.  The grout is hard to clean and if your countertops are light colored, expect the grout to get visibly grungy. (I have to bleach the grout at least bi-monthly which is hard on the grout.)  Food particles are difficult to remove from the crevices and don't even think you are going to roll out any dough on the countertop because you can't.  I had to purchase a granite topped table just to have a surface to roll dough.  (I am renting so changing them out is not an option for me.)

  3. We have used ceramic tile for our countertop and found it a very serviceable and attractive top.  We used 6x6 which aligned with the countertop edging.  We used a minimal grout line and carefully laid out the pattern to avoid unnecessary cutting or visual distraction.  It was a very durable top.

We are in the process of installing a new countertop (different kitchen) and are using granite tile tightly butted to avoid excessive grout.  Backsplash is a ceramic tile to offer visual contrast.

Tile can be the least expensive countertop for the DIY and is relatively easy to install, especially with a wood edge.  It can also be the most expensive, depending on the tile and trim you choose.

If you have it available, epoxy grout will be the most durable.

Granite tops can be the most aesthetically pleasing, Quartz is the easiest to clean and maintain, stainless steel the most durable, solid surface is seamless and is the easiest to repair, laminate the broadest color selection and easiest to replace.  You also have others such as wood, paper, lava stone, glass.
