Question:

Any way to make felafel without frying?

Felafel recipes call for deep frying.

Is there any way to make them in the oven?

Would I have to add a little oil to the mix?

We're talking about a home-made recipe, not a mix.

  1. I just make them into small patties and cook them in a non-stick pan with a spritz of oil and cook them like mini burgers.

    As for a recipe, I used a tin of cooked chickpeas, chickpea flour, breadcrumbs, onions and fresh parsley and spices, I do add a bit a mix I buy at a bulk food store for body, buzz it all in a food processor or even a hand meat grinder, make it up chill it and make up the patties before I cook them. They generally take for a nice brown about 10-15 minutes, and keep them warm in the oven at 150-200 d F, then make up the falafel, I also make my own tahini/garlic sauce.

  2. Baked Falafel

    Deep fried falafel not in your diet? Try it baked! Baked falafel is still crunchy on the outside and delicious on the inside!

    INGREDIENTS:

        * 1 15-19 oz can chickpeas, drained

        * 1 small onion, chopped

        * 2 cloves of garlic, chopped

        * 1 tablespoons of fresh parsley, chopped

        * 2 tablespoons all purpose flour

        * 1 teaspoon coriander

        * 1 teaspoon cumin

        * 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

        * salt and pepper

        * 2 tablespoons olive oil

    PREPARATION:

    Drizzle olive oil evenly in shallow baking dish. Preheat oven to 350.

    While oven is preheating, mash chickpeas with mortar and pestle or in food processor. Add onions and garlic and blend.

    Add remaining ingredients to make a thick paste-like consistency.

    Shape into ping pong size balls and place in preheated baking dish. Bake for 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through cooking.

    Serving Baked Falafel

    Baked falafel can be served the same way fried falafel would be served. Try it in a pita sandwich with tahini and veggies or on a platter with some hummus and a Middle Eastern salad.

  3. There are some recipes I have tried for baking falafels in the oven, but the results were never as good as frying.

    I suggest  you shallow fry (instead of deep frying) them in a good quality frying oil like peanut oil.  Make sure the oil is HOT when you carefully drop them in the oil.  This way they will fry in the oil with absorbing any oil.  Drain well and enjoy!

  4. you can do the potatoes steamed, or baked, broken in pieces,and added.   the meat, you can grill it, or boil it.

    you do it as you wish, and just to have some crust, grill some ingredients...

    bon apetit!
