Question:

Any websites that explain aftermarket wiring

my friend who used to install car stereo said i need to buy after market wires

because i have an old car with the factory wiring which is strange

but i figured while i wait for a store to open

maybe there is a good site that has some kind of guide for the wiring instead

embarrassing as it is to admit

it's a 91 plymouth acclaim, haha

but i want to put a new stereo into it and the wiring stopped me from proceeding

any websites that can explain how to do this?

thanks

  1. There's nothing about the wiring in a 91 Plymouth Acclaim that should cause a problem with an after-market head unit.  Does it still have the factory radio connectors?  What "strange" factor is your friend worried about?

I've installed new CD players in quite a few older Chrysler vehicles of this type, and they're some of the easier jobs out there.  I think your friend is mistaken.

Edit:  I see.  You just need an adapter harness:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as... You should be able to find this at any store that sells car audio.

These harnesses fit the factory radio plugs in your car.  The wire colors on the harnesses will match your after-market deck's wire colors.   You just have to splice your after-market deck's wiring to the adapter harness; then it's plug and play.

The extra wires in the factory plugs are illumination wires and probably won't be required for the new deck.  If you have leftover wires in the adapter harness, just tape them off so they can't short on anything.

Note that there is no ground wire in a Chrysler harness; there should have been a separate ground wire (possibly a braided cable) that connected to the factory radio chassis.  Connect your new deck's black ground wire to the factory ground wire, or to chassis metal.

The age of your vehicle isn't a factor; you would have had the exact same problem in a 2008 vehicle.  This is because each vehicle manufacturer uses its own wire color codes and plug designs, which aren't the same as the universal after-market standard.
